Former Caifanes Guitarist Alejandro Marcovich in Coma After Stroke

Alejandro Marcovich, the esteemed former guitarist of the iconic Mexican band Caifanes, is currently in a coma following a stroke he suffered on Tuesday night, May 19. His family released a statement on Friday, May 22, via social media, confirming that the musician is in the intensive care unit with a reserved prognosis. The document, signed by his wife Gabriela Martínez and their children Béla and Diego, explained that the 65-year-old guitarist was rushed to the hospital after the cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

The family assured fans that Marcovich is in capable hands with specialist doctors, alongside the constant presence of his wife and two children. Due to his critical condition, all previously scheduled concert dates for Marcovich have been postponed indefinitely. The family expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love and well wishes from his dedicated fanbase, hoping for a rapid improvement in his health.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1960, Alejandro Marcovich moved to Mexico in the 1970s with his family, who sought exile following the 1976 coup d’état. He was a co-founder of the legendary band Caifanes, contributing his talent from 1989 to 1995. Prior to Caifanes, he was also a member of Las Insólitas Imágenes de Aurora. Caifanes famously disbanded due to disputes and irreconcilable differences between Marcovich and vocalist Saúl Hernández, but later celebrated a historic reunion in 2011.

Caifanes is widely regarded as one of the most legendary and influential bands in the Mexican rock scene, known for classics such as “La Negra Tomasa” and “Mátenme Porque Me Muero.” This year, the band earned significant recognition, ranking No. 7 on Billboard’s list of the 50 Best Latin Rock Bands of All Time. Marcovich has also faced previous health challenges, including a brain tumor diagnosis in 2010 for which he underwent surgery, and a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2022.
