Foreign Giants Dominate Nigerian Music Streaming Market
Nigeria's vibrant music industry saw three global music distribution companies account for a significant 68% of the nation's total streaming volume in 2025, underscoring the substantial influence of foreign entities in the local market. Data from Creator Economy IQ revealed that Empire, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Group collectively dominated Spotify streams generated by Nigerian artists.
Empire led the charge, securing the top position with an impressive 1.2 billion streams, which translated to a 32.9% share of total Spotify streams from Nigerian artists. Its strong performance was largely attributed to its distribution partnerships with various Nigerian labels, including Dangbana Republik, effectively driving the largest share of streaming activity throughout the year.
Universal Music Group followed, ranking second with 786.4 million streams and an approximate 21% market share. The company's success was significantly propelled by artists affiliated with Mavin Records, such as Rema and Ayra Starr, both of whom were among the most-streamed Nigerian musicians in 2025.
Sony Music placed third, contributing 541.8 million streams and capturing around 14% of the market. Its streaming volume was primarily driven by artists like Tems and Shallipopi, operating through the Since '93 label. Combined, these three international powerhouses controlled roughly two-thirds of Nigeria's music streaming landscape.
This dominance highlights underlying structural gaps within Nigeria's music industry, which has historically suffered from a lack of formal corporate structures, consistent financial reporting standards, and transparent royalty management systems. Global distribution companies have effectively filled these voids by offering established business frameworks for artist management, music publishing, and international distribution.
The integration of Nigerian artists into these extensive global distribution networks has yielded substantial benefits, notably a significant increase in streaming revenue. In 2025 alone, Nigerian artists generated approximately 58 billion naira from Spotify streams, equivalent to about $41.5 million. These international partnerships have been crucial in helping Nigerian artists, including global sensations like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tems, expand their fan base through international tours and diverse digital platforms.
Despite this remarkable growth and increased global reach, the industry continues to grapple with persistent structural constraints. Challenges such as piracy and informal distribution channels remain prevalent, diminishing legitimate music revenue. Furthermore, the high costs associated with promotion, recording, and distribution pose significant barriers for emerging artists who lack the backing of major labels.
In response to these challenges, local initiatives are emerging to foster talent development and industry capacity. A notable example is singer Tems'
