Football Frenzy: K'Ogalo and Kenya Police Bag Wins as Shabana Leads League

The latest round of the SportPesa Premier League saw significant shifts at both ends of the table as teams battled before the October Fifa international break. Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia secured a crucial 1-0 victory over KCB, while Shabana maintained their top spot despite a draw. Defending champions Kenya Police and Mara Sugar also registered their maiden wins of the new season, contrasting with newcomers APS Bomet's continued struggles.
At Dandora Stadium, Gor Mahia inflicted a second defeat of the campaign on KCB coach Robert Matano, with Felix Mboya netting the decisive goal. This win propelled K'Ogalo to third place with six points, same as the bankers, just one point behind early pace-setters Shabana who sit top with seven points heading into the October Fifa international break. For KCB, this loss extended a two-year winless streak against Gor Mahia, their last victory dating back to January 2023. Since then, the two sides have met six times, with Gor Mahia winning twice and four matches ending in draws. Matano's tenure at KCB had begun promisingly with a 2-0 win over former club Tusker and a 1-0 victory against Kariobangi Sharks, but his side recently succumbed 1-0 to Mathare United before this latest defeat.
League pace-setters Shabana, despite having their 100 percent start to the 2025-2026 campaign halted, managed to stay top of the table after a 1-1 draw against Tusker at Kasarani. Austin Odongo gave Shabana the lead in the first half, but Ian Simiyu rescued a point for Tusker, who remain winless after two defeats and two draws. Shabana now sits with seven points, level with Posta Rangers.
Elsewhere, Kariobangi Sharks secured their first victory of the season, narrowly edging out Mathare United 2-1 at Kasarani Annex. Mathare United had previously defeated KCB 1-0. Mara Sugar also celebrated their first win, stunning Ulinzi Stars 2-1 at Ulinzi Sports Complex. David Omondi was the hero for Mara, bagging a brace, with his goals in the fourth and 71st minutes sandwiching an equalizer from Ibrahim Shambi for Ulinzi Stars. This victory lifted Mara Sugar out of the bottom three, moving them to 10th place with four points and ending their two-match winless streak.
In Kericho, Clinton Kinanga netted the sole goal as defending champions Kenya Police disciplined newcomers APS Bomet 1-0 in the discipline forces derby staged at Kericho Green Stadium. Kenya Police had started their title defense with a goalless draw against Ulinzi Stars last Wednesday. APS Bomet, on the other hand, continue to struggle in the top flight, having previously lost 2-0 to Muranga Seal and 4-2 to Shabana before their defeat to Police.
As the league heads into the October Fifa international break, Shabana leads the pack, closely followed by Gor Mahia and KCB, while teams like Kenya Police, Kariobangi Sharks, and Mara Sugar begin to find their rhythm, leaving APS Bomet searching for their first points.
