Verve Surpasses 50 Million Card Issuances, Strengthening Its Leadership in Nigeria’s Payment Industry

Verve, one of Africa’s leading payment technology companies, has achieved a major milestone by issuing over 50 million payment cards in Nigeria. This feat reinforces its dominance in the country’s financial services sector, following its 2022 benchmark of 35 million cards. According to BusinessDay Nigeria, the company’s consistent 42% growth rate underscores its strong operational capacity and continued appeal among consumers and fintech institutions.

As the largest domestic card system in Africa, Verve remains committed to delivering secure, customizable, and cost-effective payment solutions. Its products—ranging from physical to virtual cards—are tailored to address regional market challenges while driving financial inclusion and digital transformation across the continent.

A significant partnership fueling Verve’s recent success is its collaboration with Opay, a rapidly expanding mobile payment platform. Together, they launched the Opay Verve Instant Debit Card, directly linked to users’ digital wallets. The card’s international usability allows seamless transactions with global merchants such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Facebook, Microsoft, and Uber, marking a pivotal step toward integrated cross-border payments.

Founded in 2009 as a subsidiary of Interswitch Group, Verve was created in response to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) directive to transition from magnetic stripe cards to chip-and-PIN technology. Over time, it evolved into an independent brand, expanding its reach to over 190 countries and solidifying its presence in 21 African nations.

Central to Verve’s continued success is its commitment to robust security. The company integrates world-class fraud prevention technologies, including EMV chip and PIN protection, biometric authentication, and voice and facial recognition systems. These innovations ensure maximum safety and reliability for cardholders during every transaction.
