Final Scream: Critics Unveil Spine-Tingling Verdicts on ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’

Recent cinematic releases offer a diverse viewing experience, ranging from the spine-chilling conclusion of a long-standing horror franchise to a visually rich but critically divisive drama, and a deeply moving social-realist debut. These films showcase varied storytelling approaches, from supernatural scares to intimate human struggles.
Leading the pack in the horror genre is "THE CONJURING: LAST RITES," marking the final chapter in the decade-long Conjuring franchise. Directed by Michael Chaves, who also helmed the previous three entries, this film brings parapsychologists Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) back for their last haunted hurrah. The narrative begins with a harrowing flashback to 1964, where a haunted mirror leads to Lorraine's early, traumatic labor and a demon's attempt on baby Judy's life. Miraculously, Lorraine's fervent prayers ensure Judy's survival, establishing a loving family life intertwined with their ghostbusting endeavors. However, the evil presence, sensing Judy’s inherited visions, never truly rests.
Fast-forward to 1986, with the Warrens in retirement due to Ed's heart condition. Yet, the malevolent mirror resurfaces, this time terrorizing the Smurl family in Pennsylvania. This demon proves exceptionally powerful, inflicting violent attacks that plunge the Smurls into terror. The film expertly utilizes classic horror tropes, emphasizing the chilling power of the unseen, a technique that keeps audiences on edge. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson deliver their usual extraordinary performances, grounding the supernatural chaos with believable calm. Shifting gears, "ON SWIFT HORSES," directed by Daniel Minahan, presents an unusual cinematic adaptation of Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel. The film opens in post-Korean War California, where Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her soon-to-be husband, Lee (Will Poulter), pursue the American dream. Their fresh start is complicated by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic younger brother, Julius (Jacob Elordi), who soon departs for Las Vegas. There, Julius finds work in a casino and embarks on a secret romance with his coworker, Henry (Diego Calva). Meanwhile, back in California, Muriel begins her own clandestine life, delving into gambling at racetracks and discovering an unexpected passion with her neighbor, Sandra (Sasha Calle).
Despite its intriguing premise and rich source material, "ON SWIFT HORSES" struggles to fully realize its potential on screen. While Andre Chemetoff’s cinematography bathes the film in a captivating golden haze, creating a visually stunning experience, critics note a significant lack of substance beneath its polished exterior. The film, which aspires to be a sweeping saga reminiscent of "East Of Eden," ultimately falls short, never progressing beyond a "slow trot" according to one review. It is characterized as a production long on style but conspicuously short on profound meaning or narrative depth.
Finally, Jasmin Gordon’s debut feature, "THE COURAGEOUS," offers a powerful and heartfelt drama that stands as an honest portrait of survival, love, and dignity. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Switzerland’s Valais region, the film follows Jule (Ophelia Kolb), a rebellious single mother of three. Despite facing dire poverty, battling past mistakes, and contending with an indifferent welfare system, Jule steadfastly refuses to give up on her family, embodying a spirit of unwavering resilience.
Ophelia Kolb, known for her role in "Call My Agent!", delivers a career-defining performance as Jule, masterfully capturing the character’s complex contradictions with remarkable depth. Gordon directs with exceptional sensitivity, skillfully blending social realism with poetic imagery, ensuring the film never feels needlessly moralizing. Instead, "THE COURAGEOUS" sheds light on the often-invisible struggles of the working poor in modern Swiss society, where destitution is frequently a taboo subject. The film deliberately avoids cliché or sentimentality, presenting a nuanced exploration of love, resilience, and the inherent complexities of being a flawed human. Gordon’s mature and engaging debut, combined with Kolb’s mesmerizing performance, creates a socially aware and profoundly moving cinematic experience.
