Fatal Incident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Involving Tanker Explosion and Crashes

A series of tragic road incidents on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway resulted in multiple fatalities, injuries, and severe traffic disruptions. The incidents involved vehicle collisions and tanker explosions, creating a challenging day for commuters and emergency services.

In one major incident at the Car Park C section of the expressway, five people were killed and seven others injured when a Mazda bus, carrying a total of twelve passengers, collided with a Howo truck. Florence Okpe, Public Education Officer of the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), stated that the truck, reportedly due to speeding and brake failure, lost control and rammed into the Mazda bus as it was attempting a turn. The injured victims were transported to Famobis Hospital in Mowe, while the deceased were taken to Idera Morgue.

Later the same day, a fully-loaded petrol tanker overturned and exploded near the NASFAT prayer ground (also reported as Olowotedo area, inward Mowe) on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around 3:00 p.m. The tanker reportedly lost control, spilled its contents, and ignited, leading to a massive inferno. This incident caused panic among commuters and significant traffic gridlock, with backlogs stretching towards Berger on the outbound Lagos corridor.

Two people sustained injuries in the NASFAT tanker explosion and were taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Shagamu, as confirmed by Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE). The blaze engulfed and destroyed six vehicles: four trucks, one commercial bus, and one Toyota Camry. Emergency responders, including FRSC, TRACE, police, and Fire Service units from Ogun and Oyo States, were deployed to manage the scene, control the fire, and divert traffic, with motorists coming from Lagos being rerouted via Christ Embassy Camp.

Compounding the traffic woes on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, another tanker and an 18-tyre truck were reported to have fallen near Ogere Bridge on the same day, causing further extensive road blockages.

Separately, in Lagos city on Wednesday evening around 5:00 p.m., a major fire outbreak occurred at the Optima Filling Station in the Obawole area of Fagba, along Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road. The fire was triggered by an explosion involving a 33,000-litre petroleum tanker while it was discharging Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The blaze subsequently affected a second 33,000-litre tanker stationed nearby.

The fire at the Optima Filling Station caused significant damage to the initial tanker, the station's retail marts, and a one-storey residential building situated behind the station. Another structure on an adjacent street was also impacted. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in this incident. Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, including units from Agege, Ikeja, and Alausa headquarters, responded promptly to control the blaze and prevent further escalation.
