Explosions Rock Woolworths: Sniffer Dogs Deployed Amidst Bomb Squad Scares

Woolworths has significantly ramped up its security protocols across its South African branches, deploying specialist bomb-sniffing dogs nationwide. This intensified measure follows two distinct explosive incidents that occurred at its stores within a 24-hour period, prompting immediate action to safeguard both customers and staff.

The retailer publicly shared images of these canine units conducting thorough sweeps at various locations, expressing gratitude to the teams for their dedicated efforts. On May 31, 2026, Woolworths SA posted on social media platform X, stating, “Hi Woolies shoppers, this weekend we had a few esteemed guests in attendance at stores across the country. A big thank you to all the selfless helpers who are working and sniffing hard to keep us all safe.”

These heightened security alerts were triggered by the detonation of improvised explosive devices at two different Woolworths outlets on consecutive days. The first incident took place during the early hours of May 28 at the Menlyn Park branch in Pretoria. A second device subsequently detonated at the Preller Square store in Bloemfontein on May 29. Both explosions occurred between 01:00 and 02:00, times when the stores were not open to the public. Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported in either event, although Woolworths acknowledged that some employees were understandably shaken and confirmed that they were receiving necessary support from the company.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) swiftly responded to both sites, conducting initial sweeps to ensure there were no additional threats. The Hawks, a specialized investigative unit, have since taken over the lead in the ongoing investigation. While the Menlyn Park store has since reopened its doors, the Preller Square branch remains closed as forensic investigators continue their meticulous work. Woolworths has confirmed that authorities have yet to establish a motive behind these attacks or identify any suspects. The retailer previously stated that no further information regarding the nature of the devices or the reasons for these attacks is currently available.

Despite these serious incidents, Woolworths has affirmed its commitment to continue operating normally, simultaneously reinforcing security measures across its entire national store network. The retailer declared that “Targeted attacks will not deter us,” and reiterated its dedication to its customers, promising, “We will keep showing up, keep opening our doors, for you, our customers.”
