Exclusive Shocker! Taylor Swift Rejected Iconic Fantasy Series Role

Music serves as an indispensable element in bringing cinematic and television productions to life, often acting as the crucial final piece that unifies all creative components. Beyond the writing, acting, and directing, the carefully chosen soundtrack can define character entrances with underlying themes, or create iconic "needle drop" moments with familiar hits, ultimately determining the emotional impact and overall success of a sequence. The CW’s celebrated teen drama, The Vampire Diaries, stands as a prime example of a production where music played a pivotal role in elevating its narrative and emotional depth.
Series co-creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson collaborated closely with music supervisor Chris Mollere to curate a soundtrack that would transform the show into an even more immersive and impactful experience. Their dedication ensured that the musical landscape of Mystic Falls left a lasting impression on its audience, contributing significantly to its long-running popularity.
During a recent panel at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, moderated by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder reflected on the show’s unforgettable musical contributions. Somerhalder shared a remarkable fact about the series’ initial success, revealing that the Season 1 soundtrack alone "sold like 15 million copies." He emphasized the discerning choices made by the creative team, noting, "The music moments were amazing. We had incredible music supervisors — Julie [Plec] and Kevin [Williamson] [...] they knew what was gonna hit."
Somerhalder also delved into intriguing behind-the-scenes stories related to the show's musical and celebrity connections. He addressed persistent rumors about a potential appearance by multi-Grammy-winning musician Taylor Swift, confirming, albeit with a laugh, "I think Taylor Swift, we offered this role, and she was like, ‘No.’" While the "Shake It Off" singer never graced the set, another global superstar made unofficial appearances.
Recalling events from around 2010 or 2011, Somerhalder recounted how Lady Gaga, then Stef Germanotta, would visit the Georgia set to spend time with her boyfriend, actor Taylor Kinney, who was a cast member. At the time, Lady Gaga was at the zenith of her fame, described by Somerhalder as "literally the biggest thing since sliced bread." He humorously described her casual presence on set – "no bra, fishnets… hanging out, chewing gum, drinking coffee, watching her super handsome and awesome boyfriend on screen" – and the immediate reaction her presence would elicit: "And all of a sudden every producer was all of a sudden there. Every actor who wasn’t working was all of a sudden there. It was just the funniest thing. So that was really special."
Despite not featuring appearances from these two massive pop culture figures, The Vampire Diaries was nevertheless rich with memorable musical moments and boasted a soundtrack desired by millions. Somerhalder reiterated the profound effect of the music, stating, "We had incredible music. It really lifted and elevated these moments. We had some big artists and really awesome songs… Music is so important, and we are so fortunate — we had a teeny tiny music budget and sometimes when we needed it, they would spring for the songs that we needed. And it’s very special." This highlights the creative team's skill in maximizing their resources to infuse the show with a distinctive and impactful musical identity.
