EXCLUSIVE: 'Daredevil' Star Sparks Hope for 'Defenders' Revival After Shock Cancellation
The #SaveDaredevil campaign gains momentum as Daredevil: Born Again is set to conclude with Season 3, featuring the highly anticipated reunion of The Defenders. Finn Jones, reprising his role as Iron Fist, expresses hopes for a Heroes for Hire spin-off and promises a more grounded, wiser portrayal of Danny Rand, addressing past criticisms.
The fan-favorite #SaveDaredevil campaign has seen a resurgence following news that the highly anticipated MCU reboot, Daredevil: Born Again, is slated to conclude with Season 3. While the series has garnered critical attention and largely positive consensus, successfully re-introducing New York's grittiest superhero to the mainstream, the impending conclusion has stirred fan concern and renewed calls for the characters' continued presence in the MCU.
Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again notably addressed some initial criticisms and marked the return of another beloved Defender, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones. However, Season 3 is poised to deliver an even grander reunion, officially confirmed by Marvel at New York Comic Con after set photos leaked online. This highly anticipated season will not only see Charlie Cox's Daredevil and Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones reunite, but also feature the return of Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Iron Fist. This signifies the first official reunion of New York's iconic superhero team, The Defenders – a decade after their initial team-up.
Despite the excitement surrounding this full reunion, its short-lived nature within Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 has left many fans wanting more. Addressing this, one of the team's core members, Finn Jones, who portrays Danny Rand (Iron Fist), shared his hopes for the future during an interview with Collider's Maggie Lovitt at NYCC. Jones expressed optimism that the conclusion of Daredevil: Born Again could serve as a springboard for another series, bringing back the beloved Netflix-era characters. He specifically pitched a fan-requested concept: a Heroes for Hire series, stating, "I personally I would love to see Heroes for Hire. Just gonna pitch that right now. I love working with Mike." Jones emphasized that fan viewership is crucial for such projects, noting, "If the eyeballs are there, then the stories get told."
Jones also addressed the prior reception of his character, Iron Fist, acknowledging that Danny Rand's initial outing in the MCU was not as warmly received as his peers. He sees Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again as an opportunity for character growth. "From a character perspective, he was a hothead; he wasn't attuned with his powers," Jones explained. "But this time round I'm able to really dig into a much more grounded, wiser, and powerful character. I think I've done a bit of growth along the way as well, so it's a beautiful thing." This commitment to evolving the character promises a more mature and powerful Iron Fist, offering exciting prospects for fans looking forward to his return. Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is expected to debut in 2027, with the potential for future Defender-led projects dependent on fan engagement.
