Ex-NEIP CEO Kofi Ofosu Nkansah Hospitalized After Arrest, Now Faces Formal Charges

Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), has been formally charged with publishing false news by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB). This development follows his arrest and subsequent questioning by NIB officers, which led to a deterioration of his health requiring hospital admission.
His lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, confirmed these events during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen. According to Mr. Awuah, Mr. Nkansah’s health declined shortly after his arrest on Tuesday, experiencing a spike in blood pressure and complications related to a pre-existing bone condition causing severe discomfort.
He was subsequently admitted to the BNI clinic for medical care to stabilize his condition while investigations proceed.
The arrest and charges stem from ongoing investigations into allegations concerning the sale of government-sponsored foreign scholarships. President John Dramani Mahama had previously instructed the NIB to probe claims of payments being made to secure state-funded scholarships abroad. Mr. Nkansah was initially invited by the NIB to assist with these investigations, following a search of his residence conducted by NIB officers in a convoy of three pickup vehicles.
The charge of publishing false news specifically relates to allegations that someone paid money to secure a government-funded scholarship to study abroad. Despite being formally charged,
Mr. Nkansah remains in NIB custody, a situation his lawyer questions, stating, “How do you detain someone who has been charged with publication of false news?” He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
The President’s directive for the NIB to investigate followed Mr. Nkansah’s public discussions on Sompa 106.5 FM regarding alleged improper practices in the award of overseas scholarships.
A statement dated February 3, 2026, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President, noted the significant public interest generated by these Twi-language discussions which circulated widely across media platforms, prompting the official investigation.
