Erastus Edung: Basic Salary, Allowances and Other Perks Nominated IEBC Chair Will Enjoy if Approved

After more than two years, the government has nominated a new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

President William Ruto nominated lawyer Erastus Edung Ethekon as the new chairperson of the commission.

If the commission is approved by parliament, Ethekon will head six members of the commission, including Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduoland Fahima Araphat Abdallah.

Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) circular for the financial year 2023/24 indicates that the IEBC chairperson is entitled to a basic monthly salary of KSh 574,200.

If approved by MPs, the lawyer will also get a house allowance of KSh 200,000 plus a salary market adjustment of KSh 182,800.

This brings his total gross pay to KSh 957,000.

Other perks that Ethekon will get are:

SRC states the basic salary of IEBC vice chairperson at KSh 475,511, house allowance of KSh 150,000, plus salary adjustment (KSh 167,008), bringing the total gross pay to 792,519,.

The member of the commission is entitled to KSh 475,511 basic salary, KSh 150,000 house allowance and KSh 167,008 market adjustment rate.

All the commission gets are other benefits, including transport and medical allowances.

Ethekon will take over from the late Wafula Chebukati, who retired in January 2023.

Chebukati received a pension payment and a gratuity package, amounting to 31% of his basic pay.

The former IEBC chair pocketed over KSh 12.4 million in his retirement package.
