Epic Voyage: Cape Town Steals Spotlight, Anchoring Azamara's 175-Night 2028 World Cruise!

Azamara Cruises has unveiled its ambitious 2028 deployment, placing Cape Town and South Africa at the forefront of its global itinerary. This program features a flagship 175-night world cruise and a curated portfolio of extended regional voyages, all designed around immersive, destination-rich experiences. The move significantly bolsters Cape Town's reputation as a premier turnaround port for international luxury cruise operators, consequently opening new avenues for tourism professionals throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

The 2028 schedule, described by Azamara as one of its most expansive to date, meticulously blends a comprehensive spring, summer, and autumn sailing program with flexible booking options for its world cruise, which will be undertaken aboard the Azamara Onward. A defining characteristic of this season is the pronounced emphasis on extended time spent in port rather than at sea, with a remarkable 87 percent of sailing time dedicated to facilitating in-port experiences. Furthermore, the deployment boasts over 360 late-night departures and overnight stays, collectively accounting for more than half of all port days across the entire fleet.

Africa is intricately woven into the fabric of the world cruise itinerary, a monumental journey traversing six continents and approximately 40 countries over 175 nights. This voyage includes extended stays in pivotal destinations such as Cape Town, alongside calls across Australia, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. Crucially, the world cruise has been designed with flexibility in mind, allowing guests to book smaller segments of the journey instead of committing to the full circumnavigation. This approach broadens its appeal, particularly among African travelers seeking more adaptable travel options. Sample world cruise segments include an exploration of Peru, Chile, Pitcairn, and French Polynesia from January 19 to February 4, 2028; Australia and Indonesia from March 1 to 17; and Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore from March 28 to April 10.

Beyond the signature world cruise, Azamara has introduced nine Grand Voyages, each lasting 35 nights or longer, in addition to six Combination Cruises that artfully blend multiple world cruise segments into more expansive regional adventures. Michael Pawlus, Head of Itinerary Planning at Azamara Cruises, emphasized the line's continuous commitment to refining its routes to deliver thoughtfully curated guest experiences. He highlighted that country-intensive sailings in regions like Greece and Italy remain a core offering, while the introduction of Asia-focused itineraries in 2028 significantly broadens both the geographical range and thematic depth of available destinations.

The broader 2028 program encompasses 85 cruises in Europe and, for the first time in the company's history, a full season dedicated to Asia. The Asian deployment will feature 33 sailings aboard the Azamara Pursuit, with itineraries intricately weaving through Japan, South Korea, and China. Azamara is also set to unveil 12 maiden ports across Europe and Asia, spanning captivating locations in France, Greece, Latvia, South Korea, and Japan. Selected itineraries will also incorporate scenic cruising and unique river transits, including journeys along the Guadalquivir to Seville, the Seine to Rouen, the Yangtze to Shanghai, and the Mekong Delta to Ho Chi Minh City.

For African tourism stakeholders, the prominent inclusion of Cape Town as both a featured port within the world cruise and a focal point of Grand Voyage programs emphatically underscores South Africa's increasing importance in long-haul luxury cruise planning. The city has steadily evolved into a preferred turnaround and overnight destination for premium operators aiming to deliver more meaningful regional encounters. The provision of extended evening access directly translates into increased visitor spending across various sectors, including waterfront attractions, cultural districts, restaurants, day-tour operators, and ground handlers, thereby reinforcing the positive economic ripple effect of luxury cruise tourism. The 2028 deployment also follows recent refurbishment work completed aboard Azamara Quest and Azamara Onward, as part of the line's ongoing 'Azamara Forward' initiative. The clear message for African tourism professionals is that as global luxury cruise lines deepen their commitment to African ports, the coming years will likely witness heightened demand for sophisticated shore excursions, premium hospitality services, and seamless turnaround logistics. Aligning product offerings with this growing wave of long-stay luxury cruise traffic will be indispensable for operators seeking to capture a meaningful share of this rapidly maturing market segment.
