Epic Gaming World Returns! 'Minecraft 2' Unleashes 2027 Release Date as Studio Merger Looms

To the delight of many, Warner Bros. has officially greenlit “Minecraft 2,” a highly anticipated sequel to its colossal box office success, “A Minecraft Movie.” This follow-up film is slated for a theatrical premiere on July 23, 2027, arriving approximately two years after the original movie, which was released in April 2025 and significantly boosted Warner Bros.' financial standing at the box office.
“A Minecraft Movie,” based on the immensely popular video game, became an instant theatrical sensation for Warner Bros. and Legendary. It obliterated opening weekend projections, securing $162 million domestically and $312 million globally. Propelled by younger audiences and the viral “Chicken Jockey” trend, the PG-rated adventure maintained its considerable draw throughout the spring, culminating in a staggering $957 million worldwide gross against a reported budget of $150 million. This impressive haul positioned it as the second-highest grossing Hollywood film of 2025, just behind Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” which garnered $1.03 billion.
The monumental success of “A Minecraft Movie” marked a crucial turning point for Warner Bros., particularly after a series of earlier box office disappointments that included “Joker: Folie a Deux,” “Mickey 17,” and “The Alto Knights.” Following this triumph, the studio embarked on a remarkable streak, achieving six consecutive wins with films such as “Sinners,” “Final Destination Bloodlines,” “F1: The Movie” (distributed for Apple), “Superman,” “Weapons,” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites.” Warner Bros.' successful year concluded with Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio’s critically acclaimed “One Battle After Another,” which generated $110 million within two weeks against its $130 million budget.
Jared Hess, who directed the first “Minecraft” film, is confirmed to return as director for “Minecraft 2.” He will also co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta. While Warner Bros. has teased that explicit plot details for the sequel “remain deep in the mine for now,” the continued involvement of Jason Momoa as a producer hints at the potential return of his character, the washed-up video game champion Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. The original film featured Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garrett. Other producers on board for the second “Minecraft” adventure include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólafsson.
The initial “A Minecraft Movie” centered on Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Natalie (Emma Myers), siblings who relocated to a quiet rural community following their mother's death. Henry’s discovery of two artifacts at Garrett Garrison's video game store, previously owned by Steve (Jack Black), inadvertently transported him, Natalie, Garrett, and real estate agent Dawn (Danielle Brooks) into the cubical dimension known as Overworld. There, they found Steve, who had vanished into Overworld years earlier, and he trained them in the art of reshaping the terrain by combining its distinctive cubes. Throughout their training, they also had to contend with the porcine witch Malgosha (Rachel House), who coveted the power of Steve's artifacts.
The 2027 movie calendar is still developing, and “Minecraft 2” is set to face considerable competition on its July 23 release date. Disney’s “The Simpsons 2,” a long-awaited sequel to “The Simpsons Movie” which grossed $536.4 million USD in 2007, is scheduled to premiere on the same day. Warner Bros. itself had another film, “Bad Fairies,” an animated musical from Megan Nicole Dong, on its schedule for July 23, which may now be moved to accommodate “Minecraft 2.” Earlier in the month, on July 9, Warner Bros. plans to release “Man of Tomorrow,” a DC Comics movie featuring Superman teaming up with Lex Luthor. The only other film currently scheduled for July 2027 is the horror sequel “A Quiet Place Part III,” set to bow on July 30.
