End of an Era: Beloved Highguard Service Announces Permanent Shutdown Next Week

Wildlight Entertainment has officially announced the permanent shutdown of its online multiplayer shooter, Highguard, effective March 12. This decision comes after a remarkably brief operational period, as the game, developed by former veterans of the highly acclaimed Titanfall and Apex Legends franchises, only launched to the public on January 26.
The game's lifecycle will span a mere 45 days from its initial release to its ultimate closure. This short duration has inevitably drawn comparisons to other recently failed online titles in the gaming industry. Notably, Highguard managed to outlast Sony's much-maligned 2024 online shooter, Concord, by a significant margin of 31 days, highlighting a challenging climate for new online multiplayer games attempting to find a stable player base and commercial success.
The swift demise of Highguard underscores the competitive and often unforgiving nature of the online shooter market. Despite coming from developers with a strong pedigree in the genre, the game failed to capture sustained interest, leading to its early discontinuation. This event serves as another stark reminder of the difficulties faced by developers in launching and maintaining live service games in an increasingly saturated market.
