Emergency inspection forces partial closure of Fire Island Inlet Bridge - Newsday

Published 7 hours ago2 minute read

The Fire Island Inlet Bridge, which connects Jones Beach Island to Robert Moses State Park, was partially closed Monday morning due to reports of a falling object on Sunday night, the state Department of Transportation said.

Around 9 p.m., NYSDOT received a report of an object falling from the bridge and conducted an initial inspection overnight, spokesperson Stephen Canzoneri said.

In the interest of safety, the department said it is limiting traffic to one direction until a secondary inspection can be conducted Monday.

The bridge provides the only vehicular access to Robert Moses State Park.

According to a state database, the bridge was built in 1962 and was inspected as recently as May 2024. That inspection found its condition was "not poor" -- meaning it scored above four on the state's nine-point rating system.

Further details were not immediately available.
