Ekiti Ramps Up Disease Surveillance Against Ebola, Diphtheria Threat

The Ekiti State Government has intensified its efforts to safeguard public health by significantly enhancing disease surveillance and rapid response mechanisms across all 16 Local Government Areas. These proactive measures are specifically aimed at preventing the potential importation and spread of highly contagious diseases such as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and diphtheria within the state.

Dr. Bosede Alowooye, the State Epidemiologist, underscored the critical importance of these initiatives, stating that the state remains on high alert following reports of Ebola outbreaks in several countries globally. She emphasized the necessity for all stakeholders to maintain unwavering vigilance to avert the introduction and widespread transmission of the disease within Ekiti State. To this end, comprehensive sensitization campaigns have been meticulously organized, designed to fortify prevention strategies, facilitate early detection of cases, and ensure prompt reporting of any suspected infections.

The sensitization programs have strategically engaged a diverse array of critical stakeholders, including influential community leaders, respected religious figures, diligent media practitioners, key members of road transport unions, and dedicated health promotion officers. This broad-based involvement aims to significantly amplify public awareness and cultivate a collective responsibility in disease prevention.

In his remarks, Dr. Charles Doherty, who serves as the General Manager of the Ekiti State Health Insurance Scheme and is also the Pillar Lead for Ebola Risk Communication, strongly urged all residents to take immediate action upon noticing any symptoms. He advised that suspected cases of both Ebola and Diphtheria should be reported without delay to the nearest health facility to ensure swift medical intervention and containment.

Dr. Alowooye further elaborated on the clinical presentation of Ebola, listing key symptoms that residents should be aware of. These include sudden high fever, intense muscle pain, persistent headache, stomach ache, severe vomiting, difficulty in breathing, and the appearance of skin rashes. Recognizing these signs is crucial for early identification and reporting.

To mitigate the risk of transmission, residents were provided with essential public health advice. This includes the consistent practice of proper hand hygiene, maintaining overall personal cleanliness, and the imperative to promptly report any suspected cases to health authorities. Furthermore, specific guidance was issued for individuals with a recent history of international travel, particularly to countries where Ebola outbreaks have been reported, such as Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. These individuals are strongly advised to report their travel history to health authorities and seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
