Eid-ul-Fitr Joy Marred by Chief Imam's Stern Warning on Youth Indiscipline and Environmental Threat

Following the successful conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, the Office of the National Chief Imam, led by Shaikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, extended warm felicitations to Muslims in Ghana and across the globe on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Describing Ramadan as a period of sacrifice, discipline, and spiritual growth, the message praised believers for their steadfastness and devotion, offering prayers for Allah’s acceptance of their acts of worship and invoking blessings, forgiveness, and peace for the Muslim Ummah. The celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr was highlighted not only as a moment of joy but also as a crucial opportunity for reflection and renewed responsibility, urging Muslims to ensure their festivities remain "within the bounds of decency, modesty, and legality."
A central theme articulated by the Office of the National Chief Imam was “Our Earth, Our Future,” emphasizing environmental protection as a core religious and moral duty. Drawing guidance from the Qur'an, the message underscored that the earth and its abundant resources are signs of Allah’s greatness and a sacred trust placed in humanity's care. It highlighted Qur’anic teachings on the balance and harmony in creation, calling upon believers to embrace their role as Khalifah—stewards responsible for preserving the natural world. The earth provides sustenance for all living beings, with resources allocated in due measure, necessitating wise, moderate, and grateful management by humans.
The Chief Imam raised profound concern over increasing environmental degradation, issuing a strong warning that many contemporary global challenges stem from human actions. Specific Qur’anic verses cautioning against corruption on land and sea were cited, portraying such destruction as a direct consequence of irresponsible behaviour. The statement particularly condemned illegal mining activities, locally known as galamsey, along with indiscriminate sand winning and deforestation, identifying these practices as severe threats to Ghana’s ecosystems, water bodies, and long-term sustainability. Wastefulness and extravagance were also criticized, with Islam promoting responsible resource use and discouraging excess.
Beyond environmental stewardship, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, expressed deep concern over a growing trend of indiscipline among the youth, warning that it poses a serious threat to the nation’s future leadership. During recent Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, he questioned the trajectory of many young people, emphasizing that "these young people are our leaders tomorrow... What kind of students and future leaders are we building?" He also highlighted the alarming rise in drug abuse, particularly within sections of the Muslim community, describing it as a "painful experience and a painful reality" that is destroying the youth. Despite these challenges, Sheikh Sharubutu affirmed his readiness to collaborate with the government to address these pressing issues, offering to join any program of such importance.
The Grand Imam further explained that the true essence of fasting, as outlined in the Quran, is for believers to attain a state of piety. He stressed that this divine reward must manifest in daily conduct, serving to "mould us as people whose behaviours conform to the norms of society and the laws of the state." He profoundly stated that the "quantity of spiritual cleansing acquired in the Holy Month of Ramadan is meaningless unless it has the capacity to guarantee the quality of attitudinal transformation in the interest of society." In his counsel, the Chief Imam urged all Ghanaians, irrespective of faith, to prioritize the fundamental values of patriotism, humanitarianism, and collectivism, essential for building a secular state characterized by cultural diversity and interfaith harmony.
The national significance of Eid-ul-Fitr was underscored by the attendance of high-profile figures, including Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who joined hundreds of Muslims at the forecourt of the State House for special prayers. This gathering brought together members of the Muslim community, state officials, religious leaders, and dignitaries in a solemn yet celebratory atmosphere of prayer and thanksgiving. Amidst these reflections and calls to action, His Eminence offered heartfelt prayers for several critical global and regional issues, including justice throughout the world, peace in the Middle East, stability across the African continent, and prosperity for the Republic of Ghana, encouraging Muslims to uphold values of patience, unity, compassion, and brotherhood during times of global uncertainty. The message concluded with renewed Eid greetings and prayers for unity, prosperity, and harmony within Ghana and beyond.
