Eid-ul-Fitr Celebration Tempered by Chief Imam’s Warning on Youth and Environment

Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu has extended Eid-ul-Fitr greetings to Muslims while issuing strong warnings on indiscipline and environmental degradation.
The message, delivered by the Office of the National Chief Imam, described Ramadan as a period of sacrifice, discipline, and spiritual renewal.
Muslims were urged to celebrate Eid within the bounds of decency, modesty, and legality, emphasizing responsibility alongside festivity.
A central theme of the message, “Our Earth, Our Future,” highlighted environmental protection as a moral and religious duty.
Drawing from teachings in the Qur’an, the statement emphasized humanity’s role as stewards responsible for preserving the natural world.
The Chief Imam warned that environmental degradation, including illegal mining, deforestation, and sand winning, poses a serious threat to Ghana’s ecosystems and long-term sustainability.
He also criticized wastefulness and extravagance, stressing that Islam promotes moderation and responsible use of resources.
Beyond environmental concerns, the Imam raised alarm over rising youth indiscipline, questioning the future of leadership in Ghana.
He highlighted increasing cases of drug abuse among young people, describing it as a troubling reality affecting parts of the Muslim community.
Despite these challenges, he expressed willingness to collaborate with government through initiatives led by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to address the issue.
The Imam emphasized that the essence of fasting is to achieve piety, which must reflect in behaviour aligned with societal norms and national laws.
He urged all Ghanaians to embrace values of patriotism, humanitarianism, and unity in building a cohesive society.
The significance of the celebration was underscored by the presence of Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who joined Muslims for prayers at the State House.
Prayers were also offered for global peace, stability across Africa, and prosperity for Ghana, reinforcing the broader message of compassion and harmony.
