Edo Political Firestorm: Opposition Blasts APC Over Alleged Attack on Peter Obi, Threatens ECOWAS Court Action

The political landscape in Edo State was recently marred by a significant incident involving an alleged attack on Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, and other chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin. The incident, which occurred on a Tuesday, involved gatherings at the ADC secretariat and subsequently at the residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun. It has since sparked a heated exchange of accusations and counter-accusations among political parties and drawn the attention of human rights organizations.

The ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, swiftly condemned the attack, describing it as an escalating pattern of political intimidation and an act of terrorism against opposition figures across the country. The party announced its intention to file a suit against the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Human Rights and also report the matter to all diplomatic missions in the West Africa sub-region. Abdullahi accused the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, of making inflammatory remarks and threats, including allegedly stating he could not guarantee Obi's safety in Edo and threatening to demolish properties of opposition members.
