A police sergeant identified as Aminu Yusuf has been killed by suspected armed robbers in Benin City, Edo State while on official escort duty involving a Chinese national.
It was gathered that the tragic incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday along First East Circular Road, shortly after the escort team departed a bank premises.
Sergeant Yusuf, who bore Force Number 504545, was attached to Time Ceramic, an approved police beat, and was detailed to provide security for the expatriate during a routine cash transfer operation from the Zenith Bank branch on Sapele Road.
Police sources disclosed that the escort vehicle was ambushed by four armed men who opened fire, fatally injuring the officer.
The attackers reportedly made away with his AK-47 rifle (Breech No. BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and the sum of N5 million in cash.
The wounded officer was rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Benin, where he was confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited at God’s Care Mortuary.
Police authorities in Edo State have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, with intensified efforts to recover the stolen weapon and funds.
