Economic Breakthrough: Adesina Offers to Catalyze Nigeria's Growth Under Tinubu!
Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, former AfDB President, has pledged his support to President Bola Tinubu for Nigeria's economic growth, driven by patriotism rather than political ambition. He reported on AfDB's $7 billion financing to Nigeria during his tenure and lauded Tinubu's economic reforms, while also stressing the critical need for structural transformation beyond current stabilization efforts.Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the immediate past President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has publicly offered his support to President Bola Tinubu, expressing his readiness to contribute to Nigeria's economic growth in any capacity deemed useful. Following a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Dr. Adesina clarified that his offer was not motivated by a desire for a government appointment, but rather by his profound love for his country and an intrinsic drive to foster its development. He emphasized, "I'm back at home, here to help and ready to help. It's my country. I love my country, and I'm ready to help."
During the meeting, Dr. Adesina fulfilled a formal duty, reporting the successful completion of his two five-year terms as AfDB president. He briefed President Tinubu on the bank's significant achievements and the substantial support extended to Nigeria throughout his leadership tenure. Specifically, Dr. Adesina revealed that the AfDB provided approximately $7 billion in financing to Nigeria between 2015 and 2025. This substantial figure represents about 63 percent of the total $11.1 billion in financing the bank has channeled to Nigeria since its operations commenced in the country in 1971.
President Tinubu reportedly expressed satisfaction with the level of support provided by the development finance institution under Dr. Adesina's guidance. Dr. Adesina, in turn, commended President Tinubu for implementing crucial economic reforms, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy and the harmonization of foreign exchange windows. He acknowledged these measures as difficult but necessary, asserting that they are beginning to yield positive results. Evidence of this, he noted, includes improved foreign exchange availability, an influx of portfolio investors, and a downward trend in inflation, despite prices remaining elevated.
Furthermore, Dr. Adesina highlighted a positive shift in international perceptions of Nigeria, citing recent stable or positive outlook assessments from several credit rating agencies. However, he stressed the critical need for Nigeria to move beyond mere economic reforms and stabilization. He articulated that the country must transition towards structural transformation, sustained growth, and long-term prosperity. According to Dr. Adesina, the next vital phase involves translating the initial gains from economic reforms into broader, more inclusive economic development across the nation. He affirmed President Tinubu's awareness of this imperative and his focused efforts on driving this transition towards comprehensive growth and prosperity for Nigeria.
