Britain is bracing for a tumultuous Easter weekend marked by the arrival of Storm Dave, which is set to bring damaging winds, heavy rain, and snow, coinciding with millions of planned holiday journeys. Forecasters warned that the storm, named on Saturday afternoon, will impact northern parts of the UK, including Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and north Wales, from Saturday into Easter Sunday. Gusts of 50 to 60mph are expected widely, with exposed locations potentially seeing 60 to 70mph, and western Scotland facing extreme winds of 80 to 90mph. A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued for these areas. Additionally, north-west Scotland is under a snow warning, with up to 8-20cm of accumulation possible in areas over 200m, leading to potential blizzard conditions. A major six-day shutdown of the West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Milton Keynes will occur from Good Friday to April 8, impacting Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services, with replacement buses in operation. Other lines affected include the Bakerloo and Overground trains in London, services between Preston and Lancaster, and Anglo-Scottish routes. Extensive engineering works include £8.4 million for new track at Willesden, £8 million for overhead power equipment in Wembley, and a £7 million signalling upgrade near Ledburn. Holidaymakers heading to the European Union are warned of potential two-hour delays on arrival due to the implementation of the new EU Entry Exit System, which requires fingerprinting and photographs for non-EU citizens entering the Schengen Area. Airports Council International data indicates a 'continued deterioration in waiting times at border crossing points' across Europe. EasyJet is preparing for its busiest Easter getaway, with 16,000 flights from UK airports during the two-week school break. Meanwhile, drivers heading to continental Europe are advised to refuel in the UK, as petrol and diesel prices are significantly higher in countries like France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium. The Port of Dover is also preparing for a busy period, with its 'Operation Brock' contraflow system in place until next Tuesday.

Domestically, 12.5 million Brits are planning an overnight holiday trip within the UK for the Easter weekend, contributing an estimated £4.8 billion to the economy, according to VisitEngland. This figure surpasses the number of people travelling abroad and is an increase from previous years, reflecting a strong preference for staycations amidst cost of living concerns. Tourism Minister Stephanie Peacock highlighted the benefits of supporting domestic tourism, while VisitEngland CEO Patricia Yates emphasized the ease, convenience, and budgeting certainty of holidaying at home. With the mixed weather and high travel volumes, safety remains a paramount concern. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) urges drivers to plan ahead, slow down in wet and windy conditions, and increase stopping distances.
