Drone Disaster: Ukrainian Naval Drone Blasts Romanian Port

An Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV), identified as a Magura V5 or similar Sea Baby-class naval drone, reportedly detonated near an oil transfer facility at the Port of Constanța in Romania. These long-range kamikaze vessels, equipped with high-explosive warheads, are primarily utilized by Ukraine for targeting Russian naval assets in the Black Sea.
The incident began when the drone lost critical navigation and communication capabilities. This disruption is attributed to intense Russian electronic warfare measures, which are believed to have jammed both satellite navigation and remote-control links. Consequently, the explosive-laden vessel drifted away from its intended operational area and, without active guidance, was carried by currents and wind towards the Romanian coastline.
The drifting drone eventually became lodged near oil-containment barriers adjacent to an oil transfer facility within the Port of Constanța. Military drones of this sophisticated type are often fitted with self-destruct mechanisms designed to prevent sensitive technology from falling into enemy hands if control is lost. Reports indicate that this system activated, causing the drone to detonate after becoming stranded near the port.
Officials confirmed that a total of four naval drones were involved in this mission. One of these vessels exploded within the Romanian port area, while the remaining three reportedly detonated offshore in open waters of the Black Sea.
This event amplifies growing concerns regarding the Black Sea conflict, particularly how electronic warfare and navigation disruptions are increasingly causing military drones to inadvertently cross into NATO territory. It follows closely on the heels of another drone incident in Romania involving a Russian Geran-2 loitering munition, further highlighting the escalating risks and regional security implications.
