DOSH Leverages Google Pay to Empower the Underbanked with Digital Wallets
DOSH, the prepaid Mastercard from allpay Ltd, now supports Google Pay for its Android customers, offering modern contactless payment solutions to the unbanked and underbanked. This move provides enhanced security and financial control, helping bridge the gap for those excluded from mainstream financial services. The integration leverages allpay's unique distribution model through community partners and local authorities.DOSH, the prepaid Mastercard account managed by Hereford-based payment specialist allpay Ltd, has officially launched Google Pay support for its Android customers. This integration allows eligible users to link their DOSH card to Google Wallet, enabling seamless contactless payments in stores, within applications, and online wherever the Google Pay logo is displayed, including through compatible Android smartwatches. The initiative specifically targets consumers who are unbanked, underbanked, or otherwise excluded from conventional financial products, providing them with access to widely used modern payment rails without needing a traditional current account.
DOSH is designed as a financial control tool rather than a credit instrument, as it is credit-check-free and does not offer an overdraft facility. The addition of Google Pay ensures that financially excluded individuals can access the same contactless payment methods prevalent across the UK. Tony Killeen, founder and entrepreneur of allpay, emphasized that those who are unbanked or underbanked should not be restricted to fewer choices or outdated payment methods, stating that Google Pay integration offers a modern payment experience while maintaining the control and transparency valued by their customers.
From a technical and security standpoint, the Google Pay integration utilizes a standard tokenisation model. This means the customer’s actual physical card number is not transmitted to the retailer during transactions; instead, a device-specific token handles the payment, providing a security layer comparable to that of a standard bank-issued debit card. This security feature is particularly important for DOSH's target demographic, where the loss of a physical card can cause significant daily disruption. The DOSH account also includes features like real-time push notifications and an in-app card lock, which complement the digital wallet by allowing customers to manage a balance that cannot go negative. For those who still require cash access, up to 11,500 Post Office branches across the UK continue to support withdrawals, offering flexibility between digital and cash-based spending.
The announcement arrives at a time of significant shift in payment habits. A February 2025 feedback statement from the Financial Conduct Authority and the Payment Systems Regulator indicated that the proportion of UK card transactions completed via a digital wallet surged from 8% in 2019 to 29% in 2023. This structural change has widened the gap between the payment experiences of mainstream bank customers and excluded consumers, even as digital wallet technology has become ubiquitous. While several prepaid and e-money providers, such as Pockit and Suits Me, already serve the financially excluded segment in the UK, DOSH differentiates itself through its distribution model. It reaches customers partly through local authorities, community partners, and social housing providers, rather than solely direct-to-consumer channels, potentially leading to lower acquisition costs and higher trust among hard-to-reach groups.
allpay holds FCA authorisation as an electronic money institution under registration number 900539. This regulatory status places DOSH within the e-money framework, meaning customer balances are safeguarded in segregated accounts in compliance with the Electronic Money Regulations 2011, but they are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Prospective users and partner organizations should be aware of this distinction. Future indicators to monitor include uptake rates among DOSH’s current customer base and whether the Google Pay capability accelerates new customer acquisition through its social-housing and local-authority distribution channels. An equivalent Apple Pay feature for iOS users has not yet been announced.
