Don calls for better teaching resources in schools
A Professor of Media and Educational Technology at the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, Ronke Ogunmakin, has urged the Nigerian government to enhance teaching and learning resources at all educational levels.
She also underscored the need for the government to provide learning infrastructure to teachers, stressing that teaching quality should be grounded in structured pedagogy.
Prof. Ogunmakin stated this while delivering the 21st inaugural lecture of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State.
The erudite scholar, who doubles as the Dean, Faculty of Education at the institution, emphasised that quality education hinges on well-trained teachers, adequate resources, and effective pedagogical approaches, ultimately benefiting students and the country’s educational system.
While highlighting the benefits of using multimedia technology in the classroom, the inaugural lecturer noted that multimedia tools can enhance student engagement, facilitate interactive learning, and cater to diverse learning styles, ultimately improving academic outcomes.
Speaking on the topic, ‘The message delivered in a multimedia context for teaching and learning’, the lecturer explored the effective use of multimedia tools in enhancing educational delivery.
She stressed the importance of engaging and interactive content in promoting student learning outcomes.
With over 40 years of experience in media and education, the specialist emphasised that teachers need constant training to effectively utilise technology and integrate it successfully into their classrooms.
The Guardian reports that the institution’s inaugural lecture came days after over 4,169 teachers across Nigeria failed the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) conducted by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
Some stakeholders have expressed outrage at the development, saying it is a reflection of the country’s educational challenges and have called for urgent reforms to improve teacher training and quality.
In her lecture, Prof. Ogunmakin said: “There is a need to prioritise learning, emphasising the commencement with clear learning objectives and the selection of appropriate technologies for their delivery.
“There is a need for electricity, especially in rural areas, where solutions such as solar and microhydro power can address this requirement.
“There is need to utilise multimedia effectively to enhance inclusivity, delivering development messages to the most disadvantaged groups, particularly socially excluded individuals, such as those in special needs education.
“Equally, there is need to upgrade the bandwidth of major online education service platforms, particularly enhancing the capacity of the National Education Research Network for Educational Resources and Public Service to efficiently cater to millions of simultaneous visitors.”
The scholar also recommended partnering with telecom companies and online platforms to boost online security and suggested a blended learning approach using sustainable technologies to support student learning during and after emergencies.
