Divine Intervention! 'Shōgun' Director Joins Amazon's 'God of War' Series as Production Kicks Off

Prime Video's highly anticipated adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise, God of War, is gaining momentum with Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye joining the creative team. Toye, fresh off his success directing last year's Shōgun, is confirmed to direct the first two episodes. Production has now kicked off in Vancouver alongside casting, signaling rapid progress in bringing Kratos and Atreus to the screen. The streamer has also committed to a two-season order, reflecting strong confidence in the series.
This update comes after a challenging development period spanning over three years. Sony previously brought in veteran showrunner Ronald D. Moore to lead a creative overhaul of the adaptation. Since Moore’s involvement, script development has accelerated, emphasizing the rich Norse mythology of the games. The upfront two-season greenlight highlights the action-adventure series’ perceived scale and quality, produced collaboratively by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions.
The adaptation, led by Moore, will closely follow the narrative of the 2018 Norse-themed installment. The story centers on an older, bearded Kratos, who has moved beyond the Greek pantheon, as he journeys through Midgard with his son, Atreus, to fulfill his late wife Faye’s final wish of spreading her ashes atop the highest peak across the nine realms. The series will explore Kratos raising his son while confronting his violent past as a god slayer, learning lessons on humanity from Atreus. Early speculation that Christopher Judge might reprise his role as Kratos has been debunked.
Frederick E.O. Toye brings extensive experience to the series, having directed episodes for The Boys, The Terminal List, Fallout, and Prime Video collaborations, along with an Emmy nomination for Westworld. His work also spans critically acclaimed series such as Person of Interest, The Good Wife, The Walking Dead, and Watchmen, ensuring a steady hand to adapt the beloved game franchise.
Originally greenlit in 2022, the series saw a leadership shift when original showrunner Rafe Judkins departed in October 2024. Ronald D. Moore now serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner under Tall Ship Productions. The executive production team includes Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon, with co-executive producers Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, Ben McGinnis, and Jeff Ketcham. The production remains a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions.
