Diogo Jota's Tragic Car Crash Death

Diogo Jota, the 28-year-old Liverpool football star, and his brother André Silva, 25, tragically died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday morning, July 3. The fatal crash occurred on the A-52 highway at kilometer 65, near the border with Portugal, when their Lamborghini Huracan veered off the road and caught fire. Preliminary investigations by the Spanish Guardia Civil suggest a tire blowout while overtaking was the primary cause, with road safety experts also citing high speed and issues with the roadside barrier as contributing factors. The Italian supercar, valued at approximately £200,000, was completely engulfed in flames, killing both occupants instantly. Diogo Jota was reportedly on his way to catch a ferry from Santander to England for Liverpool’s pre-season training, having been advised against flying after a minor surgical procedure. The accident happened just 11 days after Jota had married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, 2024, with whom he had three children.

News of their untimely deaths sent shockwaves through the football world, leading to an outpouring of tributes from fans, players, and clubs globally. A private wake was held at Sao Cosme Chapel, followed by a public funeral service on Saturday, July 5, in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, where they were laid to rest at a local cemetery. The emotional ceremony saw Jota's heartbroken mother, Isabel Silva, in tears, consoled by agent Jorge Mendes. Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, was also visibly distraught, leaning on her husband’s coffin. Liverpool FC expressed devastation at the “unfathomable loss,” and the club's manager, Arne Slot, captain Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and other teammates attended, presenting floral tributes. Portuguese national team players, including Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, João Felix, Ruben Neves, João Cancelo, and Bernardo Silva, were also present.

Several prominent figures were notably absent from the funeral, sparking discussions. Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal national team captain, did not attend, reportedly due to personal reasons related to past tragedies and to avoid overshadowing the ceremony, although his mother, Dolores Aveiro, paid emotional tributes on Instagram. Liverpool legend Ian Rush was unable to attend as he was dealing with the recent passing of his own brother. Liverpool forward Luis Diaz faced criticism for missing the funeral, being sighted dancing for sponsor obligations in his hometown, although he later paid an emotional tribute, recalling Jota’s positive impact on him, especially during the kidnapping of his father.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing. While the tire blowout is cited, a road safety expert, Javier Lopez Delgado, highlighted that even a faulty tire wouldn't be the sole cause if speeds were appropriate, suggesting the brothers were moving too fast. There have been previous safety concerns with the Lamborghini Huracan model, including recalls for headlight and door handle issues in past years, although these are not directly linked to the tire blowout in this incident. Another accident had occurred at the same kilometer point on the A-52 highway just eight days prior, raising questions about the road's safety. Automobili Lamborghini has expressed condolences, awaiting further information.

Diogo Jota had a distinguished career, starting with Paços de Ferreira, then moving to Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made 131 appearances and scored 44 goals, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League. In 2020, he signed for Liverpool for £41 million. A former Portugal youth international, he made his senior debut in November 2019 and was part of the squads for the 2022 World Cup and two European Championships (2020 and 2024), also winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. His brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, a professional attacking midfielder, played for Penafiel in Liga Portugal 2, having come through Porto's youth system and also played for Paco de Ferreira, Famalicao, and Boavista. Penafiel FC released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of their player and his brother. It is important to note that Jota's brother, André Silva, is distinct from the well-known Portuguese striker André Silva, who plays for RB Leipzig; the latter's wife, Maria Rodrigues, issued a clarification to prevent confusion.
