Portuguese football star Diogo Jota has tragically passed away following a car accident in Zamora, Spain, as confirmed by the Guardia Civil to the BBC. His brother Andre Felipe also died in the crash, which occurred at approximately 00:30 BST.

The incident involved their Lamborghini, which veered off the road during an overtaking manoeuvre due to a tyre blowout and subsequently caught fire. The heartbreaking event unfolded less than a fortnight after the football star's wedding.

Jota tied the knot with his partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. Following their nuptials, the couple shared a heartfelt message on social media stating: "Yes, forever."

They share three children together and Jota had proposed to Rute back in July 2022. The striker had been at Liverpool since 2020 and has scored many important goals along the way.

Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash with a statement which read: "The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.

"1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.

"From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene."
