Derby Domination: Orlando Pirates Humble Kaizer Chiefs in Premiership Showdown

Orlando Pirates secured a dominant 3-0 victory over rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership Soweto Derby on Saturday afternoon at FNB Stadium. The Buccaneers' emphatic win was orchestrated by goals from Tshepang Moremi in the fifth minute, Oswin Appollis six minutes before half-time, and Evidence Makgopa in the 78th minute, leaving the Amakhosi faithful disappointed.

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze candidly admitted his team was "outclassed" and "nowhere near" Orlando Pirates on the day. He attributed the early fifth-minute goal by Moremi, which came from a short-corner that took a deflection off Flavio Silva, to unsettling his players and impacting their initial game plan. Kaze observed that his side struggled significantly to find any rhythm throughout the first half. He also expressed frustration over Pirates' tactics in the second half, suggesting that players frequently falling down disrupted their energy and momentum. Despite the comprehensive defeat, Kaze remains hopeful, stating that his side still has 13 matches to play and must "keep our heads up" to return to winning ways.

A standout performer for Orlando Pirates was the 23-year-old utility wingback, Kamogelo Sebelebele, who was deservedly named Man of the Match. Sebelebele delivered an outstanding performance from start to finish, whether operating at right-back or pushing higher up the flank. His pace, energy, and astute decision-making effectively nullified Chiefs' left side, notably keeping Pule Mmodi quiet throughout the contest. Sebelebele also combined effectively with Oswin Appollis on the right channel, stretching and destabilising the Chiefs defence. Following his award, Sebelebele urged Buccaneers supporters to continue backing the team even during difficult periods, while fans on social media platform X widely applauded his display, praising his defensive tenacity and overall impact.

The commanding victory also resonated with former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro, who celebrated the triumph from afar. Riveiro, who managed Pirates between 2022 and 2025, enjoyed a highly successful tenure, securing five major trophies and an impressive five consecutive Soweto Derby victories. Despite having left Pirates 10 months ago to join Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, he took to Instagram shortly after the final whistle, posting a picture of himself doing the iconic Pirates pose with his arms crossed, demonstrating his continued affection for the club. Other familiar faces celebrating the win included former Pirates players Happy Jele, Michael Morton, and Lehlohonolo Majoro, as well as political figures Julius Malema and Helen Zille.

The match itself saw Kaizer Chiefs struggle to impose themselves. After Moremi's early opener, the home side tried to play their way back, showing some promising moments down the left flank through Ethan Chislett and Pule Mmodi, but midfielders Lebohang Maboe and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo found the going tough. Pirates doubled their lead in the 39th minute when Relebohile Mofokeng expertly found Oswin Appollis in space inside the box, who then placed his shot beyond Bruce Bvuma's grasp. Just two minutes later, Chiefs had a penalty shout waved away, despite replays suggesting Deon Hotto appeared to foul Flavio Silva inside the box. In the second half, the Amakhosi showed better intent, making goalkeeper Sipho Chaine work with saves from Chislett and Glody Lilepo. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 78th minute when Evidence Makgopa headed home from a Tshepang Moremi cross, following a quick throw-in by Hotto while Inacio Miguel was off the field receiving treatment for cramp.

In terms of league standings, Kaizer Chiefs currently remain in fourth place, trailing new log leaders Orlando Pirates by 11 points, though Chiefs do hold a game in hand. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns have an opportunity to regain the top spot. Looking ahead, Kaizer Chiefs will aim to get their season back on track when they visit Richards Bay on Tuesday, March 3, at 19:30. Orlando Pirates’ next league fixture is an away clash against Polokwane City on Wednesday, March 4, at 19:30.
