Deadly Plateau Attack Rocks Nigeria, Government Enforces Curfew

A fatal attack in the Gari Ya Waye community of Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, on Sunday night resulted in an unconfirmed number of residents killed and others injured, triggering widespread panic and a heavy security presence. Following this incident, the Plateau State Government swiftly imposed a 48-hour curfew across the entire Jos North Local Government Area.

The curfew, announced by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, took effect from midnight on Sunday, March 29, and is scheduled to run until April 1. Its primary objective is to restore calm to the area and prevent any further escalation of violence. Residents reported hearing gunshots late on Sunday, which forced them indoors as security operatives rapidly deployed to the neighborhood.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang vehemently condemned the incident, describing it as a "barbaric and unprovoked" assault on innocent citizens. In response, security agencies have been directed to deploy all necessary resources to meticulously track down the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice. Authorities have also urged residents to maintain calm, remain vigilant, and fully cooperate with security agencies by providing any useful information that could aid the ongoing investigations.

Jos North has unfortunately experienced repeated security challenges in recent years, which have often led to the implementation of temporary restrictions on movement by authorities. These measures are typically put in place to forestall potential reprisals and re-establish order within the community, highlighting a recurring pattern of instability in the region.
