DCU Shocker! James Gunn Unveils Top Casting Choice Ahead of 'Man of Tomorrow'

Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, has garnered immense praise from DC Studios boss James Gunn, who considers her casting as Supergirl potentially the best decision of his career. Gunn, speaking to Howard Stern, lauded Alcock's performance, stating she is "absolutely stunning in the movie." This high commendation comes as Alcock steps into the iconic cape of Kara Zor-El, a pivotal character in the relaunched DC Universe.

Alcock's Supergirl made a surprising debut at the end of Gunn's 2025 blockbuster, Superman. In her memorable entrance, she burst into the Fortress of Solitude after an extended period of partying, reclaiming her dog Krypto. Her solo adventure, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is now in post-production and is slated for release on July 26, 2026. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira.

The plot of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on Tom King's acclaimed 2022 comic series, with art by Bilquis Evely. The story follows Kara and a young alien girl named Knolle, played by Eve Ridley (from Three Body Problem), on a cosmic journey fueled by vengeance. Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) takes on the role of Krem, the villain who instigates the events, while Jason Momoa makes an appearance as the intergalactic bounty hunter, Lobo. The cast also includes Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl.

Alcock's emergence as Supergirl solidifies her position as one of the foundational pillars of Gunn's new DCU. With Man of Tomorrow arriving in 2027 and her own solo outing preceding it, the stage is set for an expansive "Super-Family" dynamic on the big screen. Beyond Supergirl, the DCU continues to expand with other anticipated projects. These include Clayface, a horror-themed spin-off about a Batman villain starring Tom Rhys Harries, scheduled for September 11, 2026. Additionally, Peacemaker Season 2, directly connecting to the events of Superman, is currently airing on HBO Max, and Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, is in production.
