Davido Takes Center Stage: Superstar Appointed Youth Campaign Chief for Osun Governor's Re-election Bid

Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has officially been appointed as the head of youth mobilisation for the Osun State Campaign Council. This significant political development was confirmed by Davido himself on his X account, where he announced his new role under the administration of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke. Governor Adeleke is seeking re-election under the Accord Party banner, a shift from his previous affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which he won the 2022 governorship election before his move to Accord in 2025.

Davido's statement on X read, “I have been appointed by the Governor of OSUN STATE @AAdeleke_01 and flag bearer of the ACCORD PARTY as HEAD YOUTH MOBILIZATION OF CAMPAIGN COUNCIL! We look forward to a smooth campaign and your re election your EXCELLENCY! 4+4” This places the renowned artiste at the forefront of grassroots political mobilisation, particularly targeting young voters who are expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming August 2026 governorship election.

While Davido has been a vocal supporter and relative of Governor Adeleke in previous election cycles, this appointment marks a more structured and official involvement in the state's political landscape. His influence among the youth demographic is undeniable, making him a strategic choice for a campaign focused on engaging younger constituents in what is anticipated to be a fiercely contested race.

The appointment, however, comes amid heightened political tension and concerns regarding the credibility of the electoral process in Osun State. The Osun State House of Assembly has raised alarms over what it describes as suspicious developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Specifically, the Assembly highlighted the transfer of the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, to Ondo State just months before the election, suggesting it could be part of a calculated effort to influence the electoral outcome.

In a recent statement, the lawmakers expressed their concern about “a deliberate pattern of actions aimed at influencing the electoral process in Osun State.” They emphasized that the timing of such a transfer raises serious questions about neutrality and transparency, drawing a comparison to Ekiti State where no similar pre-election redeployment occurred. Furthermore, the Assembly disclosed that it had received “credible information” about planned additional deployments of “interested people” to key electoral positions, including administrative secretaries, electoral officers, assistant electoral officers, and ICT personnel across the state.

Despite these concerns, the Osun State House of Assembly asserted that such administrative changes would not undermine the democratic will of the populace. Their statement firmly declared, “Let it be clearly stated that no amount of administrative changes or deployments of interested officials will override the will of the people of Osun State. These calculated efforts, no matter how structured, cannot alter the resolve of our people. The people of Osun State are politically conscious, vigilant, and determined to ensure that their votes count and reflect their true choice.” This backdrop of political maneuvering and electoral integrity concerns adds another layer of complexity to Davido’s new role as the state prepares for the pivotal 2026 governorship election.
