Cult Classic Returns! 'Spaceballs' Sequel Locked for April 2027 Release!

Amazon MGM Studios has officially set a release date for Mel Brooks' highly anticipated 'Spaceballs' sequel, scheduled to debut on April 23, 2027. This timing is significant as it coincides with the cult classic's 40th anniversary, marking a grand return for the beloved sci-fi spoof.
The sequel brings back several original cast members, most notably Rick Moranis, who will reprise his iconic role as Lord Dark Helmet, signaling his return to acting. Joining him are Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz. Legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks, an EGOT winner and comedic genius at 99 years old, also returns to play the Yoga-esque character, Yogurt.
A fresh wave of talent will headline the new cast, with Josh Gad leading alongside Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan, and Lewis Pullman, son of original star Bill Pullman. Lewis Pullman previously shared his excitement about the experience, describing it as a "bizarre simulation" and expressing disbelief at his luck.
Josh Greenbaum, known for his work on 'Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar' and 'Will & Harper', is set to direct the sequel. The script has been penned by a collaborative team including Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. Staying true to the spirit of the 1987 Brooks-directed original, the sequel is expected to continue its tradition of hilariously riffing on popular sci-fi franchises such as 'Star Wars', 'Star Trek', and 'Alien'.
The sequel's existence was first teased last summer through a video shared by Brooks. The video featured a humorous text crawl that pointed out the proliferation of other franchises like 'Star Wars', 'Jurassic Park', 'Avatar', and 'Harry Potter' over the past 38 years. It humorously concluded: "But in 38 years, There has only ever been one 'Spaceballs.' Until now..."
While specific plot details and the official title of the sequel remain under wraps, Amazon MGM's synopsis offers a typically tongue-in-cheek description: "the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story." A prior logline further teased the film as a "non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film."
The production team boasts an impressive lineup, with Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody producing alongside Mel Brooks for Brooksfilms Limited, Josh Gad for Angry Child Productions, Josh Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter. Adam Merims, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez will serve as executive producers. The news of the release date was initially reported by Deadline.
