Crisis on Ruto's Land: 300 Villagers Left Homeless After Eviction

Residents of Mata ward in Taita Taveta County have voiced strong opposition against a developer who has been controversially allocated a wildlife corridor. This demonstration, which began on March 6, 2023, highlights a larger crisis where over 300 villagers have been left homeless, spending nights in the cold after being forcefully evicted from a 1,000-acre farm located in Mata village.
The farm in question is reportedly owned by President William Ruto. According to the villagers, the eviction was carried out by armed police officers who stormed the area at night with bulldozers. These machines were used to flatten their homes, despite the existence of court orders that explicitly halted any such eviction proceedings. The villagers' plight underscores a significant conflict between community land rights, conservation efforts, and legal due process.
