Crisis Looms: Cape Town Faces Massive 10-Hour Water Outage

The City of Cape Town has announced a series of planned water supply interruptions across several areas due to essential maintenance work. These outages are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 28, with some areas experiencing disruptions for multiple days, impacting thousands of residents and businesses.
In **Silveroaks, Kuils River**, the Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut off water supply on Tuesday, October 28, from 9:00 until 18:00. This nine-hour outage will affect Marais Street, Denne Street, Omega Street, Muller Street, a section of Langverwacht Road, and potentially surrounding streets. Residents in these areas will experience no water during this period.
A 10-hour water outage is also planned for **parts of Wynberg** on Tuesday, October 28, from 8:00 until 18:00. This critical maintenance involves connecting a newly installed water pipeline along Cogill Road and Oak Avenue to the existing supply infrastructure, alongside the installation of two valves in Langley Road between Wellington Avenue and Fleming Road. Affected areas include Piers Road, Cogill Road, Oak Avenue, Mortimer Road, Devonshire Road, Langley Road, and their vicinities. The City stressed that this work is vital for improving reliability and reducing future unplanned outages.
**Fish Hoek** will similarly experience a water supply shut-off in certain parts on Tuesday, October 28, from 8:30 until 18:30. This interruption is necessary for the installation of two valves at the intersection of Berg Road and Highway Road. Berg Road, Highway Road, and their surrounding areas will be impacted by this maintenance.
For **Dunoon and parts of Killarney Gardens**, a more extended disruption is scheduled. Water supply will be temporarily shut off from 9:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, October 28, Wednesday, October 29, and Thursday, October 30. This multi-day outage is required to perform repairs to a leaking 450mm water main that supplies these areas.
Residents in all affected areas are strongly advised to prepare for these interruptions by storing enough water in clean, sealed containers beforehand. While not all homes might experience the outage, precautions are encouraged to avoid inconvenience. The City also designated maintenance sites as construction zones, off-limits to the public for safety reasons. The City expressed regret for any inconvenience but reiterated that the work is crucial for long-term benefits to customers, with careful consideration given to timing to minimize disruption.
Following the restoration of water supply, residents may observe temporary discolouration or a milky appearance in their water. The City assures that this is a normal occurrence, typically caused by trapped air in the pipes, and should clear shortly.
