Creature Commandos' Best Episodes, Ranked

Published 2 months ago7 minute read

Creature Commandos Season 1 was extremely breakneck, with James Gunn's team not letting up in terms of pacing. They threw Amanda Waller's Task Force M into the deep end, first against Circe, then against Pokolistan.

The show's series of events led to a barrage of intense firefights, shocking murders and sneaky betrayals. Gunn and showrunner, Dean Lorey, packed in romance, drama, suspense and action. With that in mind, here is how these seven episodes ranked.

"Chapter One: The Collywobbles" had an American-based team of monsters heading to Pokolistan to stop Circe's Sons of Themyscira. Waller wanted her cronies to protect the nation and help preserve its oil for her bosses. However, it subverted the action trope with the big fight being between Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. and Doctor Phosphorus for the detonator that would stop them from becoming a Suicide Squad pastiche.

. It further laid down emotional intrigue with Rick and Princess Ilana sparking a romance. This foreshadowed conflict and a break in logic to come, while adding heart and soul to Rick as a human. This was the kind of recreational and leisure activity Waller wouldn't like, teasing her team had potential to disobey and go rogue.

Creature Commandos Star Addresses the Bride's DCU Future Following Season 1 Finale

Following the Season 1 finale, Creature Commandos star Indira Varma opens up about her future in the DC Universe as the Bride.

"Chapter Two: The Tourmaline Necklace" used a flashback to show why David Harbour's Eric Frankenstein was a toxic male. . Amid the comedy, there were deep layers of misogyny.

As this nostalgic trip occurred, Creature Commandos' Nina Mazursky and the Bride bonded. It added sentimentality to their partnership, which got upended by Circe. The subsequent brawl shaped Circe as a villain to fear and highlighted that Waller's team rarely gets happy endings. It was a high-octane episode that was balanced with quiet, cerebral moments. Gunn, once more, showed he understood that endearment had a place in aggressive stories.

"Chapter Five: The Iron Pot" showed more of Frankenstein's background once the Bride abandoned him. He tried to heal with an old woman named Bogdana in Pokolistan. Unfortunately, he went on a murderous spree once more, showing he was a selfish monster who didn't care about family. .

This episode also jumped from the past to the present, having Frankenstein and Rick fight Creature Commandos' Clayface, too. While Frankenstein came off like a decent teammate, Rick got injured. It offered hope maybe Frankenstein could be redeemed, but once his true colors showed with Bogdana, fans knew what shady decisions he would make.

Creature Commandos Star Talks Balancing [Spoiler's] Charm and Duplicity After Season 1 Finale Twist

Addressing the Creature Commandos finale's twists, one actor talks about playing the villain and whether their character's feelings were ever genuine.

"Chapter Six: Priyatel Skelet" explored more of Frankenstein's nasty ego. He dropped Rick at a hospital and hijacked a plane to go to Pokolistan to find the Bride. It reminded viewers that trust and loyalty would always be tough to come by once he was in the equation. He didn't care about helping the Bride expose that killing Ilana was bad. He just wanted to show up, woo her and demand she worship him. Conversely, this episode offered insight into the past of Creature Commandos' Doctor Phosphorus.

. Of course, fans enjoyed the Batman cameo, but at the heart, this flashback evoked sympathy for Phosphorus who was a good man underneath that radioactive shell. The icing on the cake came with the Bride and Nina defending a brothel, and Weasel finding a family of wolves for a while, emphasizing that these soldiers deserved better than being Waller's weapons. It did hint, however, that they would have to break their morals to stay on Waller's good side.

"Chapter Three: Cheers to the Tin Man" showed G.I. Robot's World War II past when it came to killing Nazis. It also displayed how, as a weapon, America had no clue what to do with the sentient machine afterwards. It built to harrowing circumstances involving Neo-Nazis and prison time. .

This journey of identity was cleverly set up to have Circe kill the robot and come off as a terrifying tyrant in the fight with Rick's team. Circe raised the stakes, only to be captured and drop a bombshell: she needed to kill Ilana to stop the princess from destroying the world. The episode left audiences bewildered about who to support, creating a huge, engaging mystery. It further showed Nina that she was in over her head working for Waller.

James Gunn Accidentally Created the Perfect Template for Mike Flanagan's DCU Horror

The Creature Commandos arc with Clayface may well have accidentally set up the direction that Mike Flanagan's story needs to go in with the DCU.

"Chapter Four: Chasing Squirrels" explored Weasel's past and revealed how human he was. . It made Weasel one of the show's biggest victims, especially considering he couldn't talk and would always be deemed a weapon.

To top off that dystopian energy, Waller locked into Circe's scary visions and saw lots of DC heroes dead. This got her to believe Circe and hunt down Ilana. Seeing the likes of Superman and Batman murdered definitely added to the puzzle, especially as it came out the same day as the Superman trailer. In one bit of precognition, Gunn made the animated series an even bigger guessing game as it tied into the larger DCU tapestry.

The Creature Commandos Season 1 ending had the Bride, Nina, Weasel and Phosphorus botching the hit on Ilana. It led to Nina's death, the Bride killing Ilana, and possible political ramifications to come. Nonetheless, it cemented that Waller and her new team were effective. The Bride took over the team and added new faces. It was another blood-soaked episode that summed up the nature of this series most.
