Putting the spotlight on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow itself, Gunn delved into Milly Alcock being cast as Supergirl in 2024, professing at the time, "Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to [co-president and co-CEO Peter Safran] for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thoughtshe might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes." Tying into this, Alcock made an official statement about her DCU casting, conveying, "So excited to be a part of the DC fam - thank you so much to [James Gunn] for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl."

"You know what movie I'm excited for? Supergirl. I'm gonna raise the bar, that movie is gonna be f****** great!"

Additionally, a rumor from 2023 claimed that Gunn himself would cast Supergirl as opposed to a director for Woman of Tomorrow. More recently, Gunn touched upon making Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow the second DCU movie in December, asserting, "I didn't necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make, but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we're going to do this movie after Superman because he was the best option."

He further professed, "Other movies have been written, but they haven't been as good as this one. So we're going to keep going with that. Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do. And that's more important than telling a grandiose mega-narrative."

Besides these bits of news, veteran Supergirl actor Melissa Benoist shared her two cents on Alcock's casting, avouching that she thinks any and all takes on the character are valuable "because of what she stands for." Tying into this, DC Extended Universe alum Sasha Calle endorsed Alcock's casting, affirming, "Have so much fun. You look so badass. Just f**king kill it and have fun."
