Edo Killings and Aftermath

The recent tragic events in Edo State have sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice. Following the mob killing of 16 hunters in the Uromi area, allegedly mistaken for kidnappers, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has taken swift action, suspending Friday Ibadin, commander of the Edo State Security Corps, and outlawing unregistered vigilante groups. The hunters, who were of northern descent and traveling from Elele, Rivers State, were found with locally fabricated firearms, leading to the fatal misunderstanding.
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a thorough investigation, and Governor Okpebholo has assured that the vigilante group involved was not registered with the state security corps. He emphasized that their actions do not align with the values of his administration and the objectives of the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law. Investigations are ongoing, with 14 arrests made and a special team established by the Inspector General of Police to apprehend remaining individuals involved. The state government is in contact with the victims' families, community leaders, and the Kano State government, urging calm and promising justice.
Amidst these developments, Isreal DMW, logistics manager for Afrobeats star Davido, has controversially called for Governor Okpebholo's resignation. In a social media post, Isreal DMW claimed that Edo State has lacked peace since Okpebholo assumed office and suggested that the governor should hand over power to his opponent, Asue Ighodalo, whom he believes was the people's choice in the 2024 election. Isreal DMW's statement referenced the Uromi killings and alleged that the 'ancestors are fully angry' due to electoral malpractices.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has also condemned the Uromi killings, describing them as avoidable had authorities been properly consulted. He extended condolences and urged Nigerians to avoid mob justice, relying instead on security agencies. Musa assured that the Armed Forces of Nigeria will collaborate with the police to ensure justice is served. He also cautioned local hunters and vigilante groups to register with law enforcement agencies to regulate firearm possession.
Reactions to Isreal DMW's statements have been mixed, with some netizens criticizing his call for the governor's resignation. However, the overarching sentiment calls for peace, justice, and thorough investigation into the Uromi killings. The Edo State government has reiterated its commitment to the constitutional rights of citizens to move freely and conduct lawful business throughout the country.
