The Upper East Region is poised for significant economic growth following the discovery of mineral resources, particularly gold, in seven of its 15 District Assemblies and Municipalities. This exciting revelation was announced by the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, during discussions with journalists at the proposed site for the Bolgatanga Airport on March 29, 2025. Minister Atanga emphasized that the development of the Bolgatanga Airport is crucial to facilitating the efficient transportation of these newly discovered resources.

Atanga highlighted the immense business opportunities presented by these mineral deposits. He stated, "This region has suddenly discovered mineral deposits. Out of the 15 district assemblies, about seven have these deposits, which presents a significant business opportunity." He underscored the need for improved infrastructure to support the burgeoning mining industry, particularly a functional airport to ensure the safe and rapid transport of gold to national markets.

The Minister emphasized that the Bolgatanga Airport is not just a regional asset, but a national one. He noted Upper East's strategic location as a gateway to Burkina Faso and Togo, stressing that an airport would significantly enhance trade and economic activity in the region and beyond. Addressing the critical issue of security, Atanga pointed out that air transport would mitigate the risk of armed robberies that currently plague miners and gold buyers who rely on road transportation.
