Controversy Surrounding Durbar Festival and Emir Sanusi's Stance

In a move prioritizing public safety, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II of Kano has voiced his support for the ban on the annual Sallah Durbar. This decision, prompted by security concerns, underscores a commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Kano residents, even at the expense of cherished cultural festivities.

The ban was announced following intelligence reports indicating potential security threats, as Kano State Police Commissioner Adamu Bakori explained. Emir Sanusi, speaking at an Iftar dinner at his palace, emphasized that the protection of the populace outweighs the Durbar's cultural significance. "We must understand that the safety of our people is paramount," he stated. "The Durbar, though a cherished tradition, is not a necessity when compared to the protection of lives and property."

Security agencies justified the ban, citing credible intelligence suggesting an imminent breakdown of law and order. Commissioner Bakori affirmed the proactive measure, stating the decision was made to prevent any potential chaos. Emir Sanusi has appealed to the residents of Kano to remain calm and law-abiding, urging cooperation with security agencies during this period. He acknowledged the disappointment the ban may cause but reiterated the importance of prioritizing security and public order.

The Emir's stance has garnered commendation from government and religious leaders alike. Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by Secretary to the State Government Ibrahim Faruq, lauded the Emir's leadership and dedication to the well-being of Kano's citizens. Professor Shehu Galadanci, Chief Imam of the National Mosque, echoed this sentiment, praising Sanusi's foresight in prioritizing security above all else.

Despite the ban, Emir Sanusi led a traditional after-prayers Eid procession, where he was greeted by cheering crowds proclaiming him as the sole Emir of Kano. This procession, distinct from the banned Durbar, allowed the Emir to connect with his subjects following the Eid prayers. Sanusi's route took him from the Eid prayer ground at Kofar Mata through various locations before arriving at Shettima’s residence, where he was received by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other government officials. The large turnout demonstrated the continued support and affection of the Kano people for their Emir.

In closing, Emir Sanusi urged the people of Kano to embrace the decision with understanding and patience. "Tradition is important, but without security, no tradition can thrive," he said, emphasizing the need for collective effort in ensuring peace and harmony within the state. As the Sallah festival approaches, the Emir's endorsement of the ban is expected to help maintain order, reinforcing the importance of security measures.
