A pastel-toned “cortisol cocktail” is making waves on TikTok, promising stress relief in a wine glass—minus the alcohol. It’s a colorful mix of coconut water, orange juice, lemon, sea salt, magnesium powder, and sparkling water. But while it may look like a wellness elixir, does it actually do anything for your cortisol levels?

According to a CNBC article by Renée Onque, the trend has grown in response to rising stress in the U.S.—77% of adults cite the country’s future as a major concern, per the American Psychological Association. While some TikTok users swear the drink helps them feel calmer, medical experts are less convinced.

Dr. Marilyn Tan, an endocrinologist at Stanford, explains that cortisol is essential for regulating blood pressure, electrolytes, and blood sugar. It spikes naturally in the morning and fluctuates during the day, making it hard to monitor. “Doctors almost never ask patients to lower cortisol,” she says.

Dr. Jessica R. Lee of the University of Maryland agrees: the cocktail might hydrate you and taste good, but it’s unlikely to significantly alter cortisol levels. “There’s not great studies out about any of this,” she notes. The mix is similar to Gatorade—refreshing, but not a miracle cure.

That said, it’s mostly harmless and might help with relaxation if magnesium aids your sleep. Just steer clear if you have chronic kidney disease or diabetes, due to the drink’s potassium and sugar content.

Instead of jumping on social media fads, doctors suggest tried-and-true stress reducers: quality sleep, daily movement, time in nature, therapy, and strong personal connections.
