A section of staff at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has thrown their support behind Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, amid mounting criticism over recent reassignments within the agency.

Prof. Klutse has faced backlash from the Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the EPA Senior Staff Association (EPASSA), who argue that the reassignments lacked adequate stakeholder engagement.

In a statement, the unions described the move as “a major human resource action taken without proper consultation,” accusing management of misrepresenting the level of dialogue held with staff representatives.

However, some concerned employees of the EPA have praised Prof. Klutse’s leadership, describing the reassignments as a bold and necessary step toward transforming the agency.

In a counterstatement, the group dismissed the unions’ claims as “misleading and divisive,” urging the public to support the ongoing reforms aimed at making the EPA more responsive, efficient, and accountable.

Prof. Klutse, in an internal memo dated June 26, 2025, defended the exercise, saying it followed “extensive consultations” with key stakeholders, including EPASSA and the local TUC branch, as well as a comprehensive internal review of the agency’s operations.

Under the directive, affected staff are expected to assume their new roles across various departments and regional offices by July 24, 2025.

“This organisational reset is a critical component of our broader strategy to build a fit-for-purpose EPA capable of delivering on its mandate,” the memo stated.

The concerned staff insist the reforms are in the agency’s best interest and called on Ghanaians to rally behind Prof. Klutse’s efforts to reposition the EPA for greater impact.
