Clippers Eyeing Chris Paul Return: Front Office 'Strongly Considering' Veteran Star

The LA Clippers have successfully acquired shooting guard Bradley Beal,a move that comes after two previous attempts to trade for the star. Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations for the Clippers, confirmed the signing following Beal's contract buyout with the Phoenix Suns, stating, "The third time is a charm." This acquisition is a significant step in the Clippers' active summer, which continues with strong consideration for a potential reunion with former franchise great Chris Paul.

Chris Paul, a 20-year veteran and free agent, is being eyed by the Clippers to bolster their playmaking and ball-handling capabilities. Frank expressed high regard for Paul, calling him "a great player" and "a great Clipper," and noted that he possesses qualities the team seeks. Paul is known to prioritize proximity to his family in Los Angeles, making the Clippers a logical fit. However, his desire to continue as a starter, a role he held in San Antonio last season, might be challenging with the recent addition of Bradley Beal.
Frank elaborated on the strategic reasons behind targeting Beal, including his potential for secondary playmaking and ball-handling, and his expected positive contribution on defense. The team also plans to integrate Beal into hand-off actions, a strategy previously effective with Norman Powell. Prior to his commitment, Beal's agent, Mark Bartelstein, engaged in extensive discussions with the Clippers' organization, including a half-hour conversation with James Harden.
Harden was credited by Frank for signing a contract that provided the Clippers sufficient financial flexibility below the first-apron hard cap, enabling them to utilize their full non-taxpayer mid-level exception. This financial maneuver was crucial, allowing the team to sign both Bradley Beal and free agent center Brook Lopez. The Clippers are one of only a few NBA teams to have fully expended their $14,104,000 Mid-Level Exception in the 2025-26 season.

Further reinforcing their roster, the Clippers also addressed frontcourt size by acquiring Brook Lopez and John Collins. Frank emphasized the priority of bringing in players with diverse skill sets that could complement one another. With 10 players projected for the rotation, and knowing head coach Tyronn Lue typically plays nine, Frank highlighted the importance of role definition and communication as the team finalizes its 14th roster spot and sets its rotation for the upcoming fall season.
