Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey': New Trailer Unleashes Mythical Footage, Director Calls Homer 'Original Marvel!'

Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated 13th directorial feature film, "The Odyssey," is poised to make a monumental impact on the 2026 summer movie season. Universal Pictures recently released a new trailer for the film, offering a glimpse into the director's ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. The preview, which debuted on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," showcased Matt Damon in the titular role of Odysseus, battling the monstrous Cyclops, while Robert Pattinson's villainous Antinous schemes to usurp the throne of Ithaca.

The film boasts an impressive, star-studded ensemble cast. Matt Damon leads as the seafaring hero Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway portraying his loyal wife, Penelope, and Tom Holland as their son, Telemachus. Robert Pattinson takes on the role of Antinous, an Ithacan suitor. The divine presence in the epic is brought to life by Zendaya as Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Charlize Theron as Circe, the goddess of witchcraft. Beyond these central figures, the cast is further enriched by talents such as Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales, Elliot Page, and Jovan Adepo, among dozens of others embodying characters from the revered poem.

Nolan not only directed but also penned the screenplay for "The Odyssey," basing it directly on Homer's epic. He produced the film alongside Emma Thomas under their acclaimed production company, Syncopy. In a groundbreaking cinematic achievement, "The Odyssey" is set to make history as the first narrative film ever to be shot entirely with Imax cameras, promising an unparalleled visual experience for audiences. As a testament to the film's immense anticipation, tickets for 70mm screenings were notably released a year in advance back in July 2025.

The film is slated for a July 17, 2026 release. This date will see it released concurrently with Disney and Sony’s prospective blockbuster "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," drawing comparisons to the phenomenon of "Barbenheimer" in 2023, when Nolan’s previous film, "Oppenheimer," shared its release with Warner Bros.’ "Barbie." "Oppenheimer" itself was a massive critical and commercial success, grossing $958.8 million and earning 13 Academy Award nominations, ultimately taking home seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan.

During his interview on "The Late Show," Nolan shared insights into the making of "The Odyssey." He expressed high praise for Tom Holland's acting prowess, stating, "He’s amazing. I’ve not worked with him before, but I would love to work with him again. I mean, he’s just an incredible talent. He’s so, so great." Nolan also had a humorous exchange with Colbert about Anne Hathaway, who reunites with him after "Interstellar" and "The Dark Knight Rises," mentioning he watched a hypothetical "The Devil Wears Prada 2" with Emily Blunt and found it "fabulous" and "terrific."

A fascinating highlight of the interview was Nolan's comparison of Homeric epics to modern comic book franchises. Prompted by Colbert's observation of Holland, Hathaway, and Pattinson's roles in superhero blockbusters, Nolan articulated, "Even comic book culture, whether you’re talking about Marvel or D.C. or all the rest, a lot of it comes directly from the Homeric Epics." He further elaborated, "The thing about Homer is, nobody knows if that was a person. Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas of his time." He added, "The thing about Homer, it is the Marvel of its day. It’s very directly this desire for us to feel or believe gods could walk amongst us, and I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that."

Acknowledging the immense pressure of adapting such a universally known story, Nolan assured that he "really tried to make the best film possible." He commented, "Anyone taking on ‘The Odyssey’ is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere and that comes with a huge responsibility." Drawing from his experience with "The Dark Knight" trilogy, he noted, "What people want from a movie about a beloved story, a beloved set of characters, is they want a strong and sincere interpretation. They want to know that a filmmaker has gone to the mat for it." Despite its epic scope, Nolan confirmed that "The Odyssey" will clock in with a runtime shorter than the three-hour duration of "Oppenheimer," promising a tightly crafted narrative. With its ambitious vision, stellar cast, and groundbreaking technical achievements, "The Odyssey" is unquestionably one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the upcoming year.
