DALIAN, China -- A mobile app is helping young Chinese consumers build up their savings bit by bit and have fun in the process, with a twist on the model of pay-per-chapter interactive fiction.

In one romance narrative, a gentlemanly university student unexpectedly extends an invitation to a weekend date at a cafe. The reader is presented with a choice of gifts to buy for the date: a fluffy phone strap or a smartphone case.
