SAPPORO, Japan -- Japanese discount retailer Don Quijote has overhauled its main store in the northern city of Sapporo in a push to boost business from the waves of overseas tourists that are increasingly traveling beyond destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

The Mega Don Quijote on the city's key Tanukikoji shopping street revamped its layout last November through steps such as shifting character goods -- a tourist favorite -- to the first floor from the third and increasing the number of cash registers to 12 from nine at its tax-free payment section on the fourth floor.
