Chiefs Roar Back: Kaizer Chiefs Storm into CAFCC Group Stage After Thrilling Simba Clash

Kaizer Chiefs entered a pivotal moment in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign, hosting AS Simba in the home leg after a goalless draw in the first leg in the Democratic Republic of Congo just over a week prior. The match carried significant weight, as Amakhosi sought to overcome a frustrating four-match winless streak and secure a coveted spot in the CAFCC group stages, a feat they had not achieved in 12 years since the 2013/14 season when they were eliminated by ASEC Mimos. Co-coach Cedric Kaze conveyed strong optimism ahead of the clash, urging fans to rally at Dobsonville Stadium and emphasizing the potential for the club to make history, noting the kick-off was set for 15:00.
Kaze confirmed the team's thorough preparation, highlighting the players' determination to advance. He also provided crucial team updates: Khanyisa Mayo was sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered in a midweek game against Siwelele FC, while Inácio Miguel faced a fitness test after going off at half-time in the same match. Despite these concerns, Kaze expressed confidence in Miguel's potential to play, noting that the remainder of the squad was fit and available for selection. Discussing the venue, Kaze expressed enthusiasm for playing at Dobsonville Stadium, citing its slightly larger pitch compared to FNB Stadium and the close proximity of the crowd, which he believed would infuse the players with vital energy. He also highlighted the team's progress, noting they had 16 points after nine league games, five more than the previous season at the same stage, with only one defeat.
On the day of the match, Kaizer Chiefs delivered a commanding performance, securing a decisive 3-1 victory over AS Simba at Dobsonville Stadium. The team started strong, netting all three goals in a dominant first half. Etiosa Ighodaro, who had joined on a free transfer in August and earned his second straight start after impressing on debut, opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, followed by Zitha Kwinika in the 14th minute, and Glody Lilepo further extended the lead in the 26th minute. This impressive win not only broke their winless run but, more significantly, propelled Kaizer Chiefs back into the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, marking their return to continental competition's advanced rounds after more than a decade.
The result brought immense relief to co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, who had overseen a challenging period including a painful Carling Knockout exit to Stellenbosch FC. This progression offers Kaizer Chiefs an invaluable opportunity to contend for a second title in two seasons, building on their Nedbank Cup championship from the previous term, which was their first in a decade. The team's starting line-up for this historic match featured Brandon Petersen in goal, with Dillan Solomons, Bradley Cross, Aden McCarthy, and Zitha Kwinika forming the defense. The midfield comprised Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Mduduzi Shabalala, and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, supporting forwards Etiosa Ighodaro, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Glody Lilepo. The substitutes included Bruce Bvuma, Reeve Frosler, George Matlou, Thabo Cele, Lebohang Maboe, Gaston Sirino, Pule Mmodi, Asanele Velebayi, and Ashley Du Preez.
