Chicago Dedicates Street to Donda West, Honoring Ye's Late Mother
Chicago honored Dr. Donda West, mother of Ye (Kanye West), by renaming East 78th Street to Dr. Donda West Way. The ceremony celebrated her legacy as a scholar, educator, and champion of Black creativity, recognizing her profound impact on both academia and her son's career.
In a poignant tribute to his late mother, Donda West, Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) returned to his hometown of Chicago on Tuesday, September 22, to participate in a ceremony for an honorary street renaming. The event saw East 78th Street in the South Shore neighborhood, an area significant to West's upbringing, officially designated as Dr. Donda West Way. Ye was present for the significant unveiling of the honorary street sign, though he did not address the attendees.
The ceremony served as a powerful recognition of Dr. Donda West's profound legacy. As stated by 7th Ward Alderman Greg Mitchell, the master of ceremonies, "Dr. Donda West was not only a scholar — she was a builder of people, a cultivator of talent, and a champion for Black creativity and intellectual excellence." Dr. West dedicated nearly three decades to Chicago State University, where she served as the chair of the English Department and a professor, significantly shaping minds and opening doors for countless individuals. Her notable achievements include founding the esteemed Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing.
The deep and supportive bond between Donda West and her son, Ye, was a central theme. She played an instrumental role in guiding and nurturing his journey to rap superstardom, with her influence immortalized in some of his most beloved songs, such as "Hey Mama" and "Only One." His critically acclaimed 2021 Billboard 200 chart-topping album, "Donda," was also named in her honor, reflecting her enduring presence in his life and work. Dr. Donda West passed away at the age of 58 in November 2007. Her death was attributed to coronary artery disease and post-operative complications following cosmetic surgery.
The honorary ceremony was attended by many of Ye's close friends and long-time collaborators, including designer Don C, Rhymefest, GLC, and Really Doe, underscoring the collective respect and admiration for Donda West. In other news related to Ye, he released his "Bully" album in March, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. He has also been on a global tour with various dates throughout 2026, with upcoming performances scheduled for October 24 in Indonesia and on Halloween in Houston.
