Chelsea Star Cole Palmer Sidelined for Six More Weeks with Groin Injury

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is now expected to be ruled out for an additional “six more weeks” due to a persistent groin injury, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed on Friday. This update revises Maresca’s earlier assessment, which had suggested a return after the international break, as surgery was avoided. “I was wrong, unfortunately, he needs to be out for six more weeks,” Maresca stated, providing a crucial update on the highly-regarded player’s recovery timeline.
Maresca emphasized the club’s commitment to Palmer’s full recovery, stating, “We try just to protect Cole as much as we can. The most important thing is that when he comes back he’s fully fit.” He also acknowledged the unpredictability of injury rehabilitation, noting that while six weeks is the current estimate, the situation needs to be monitored “step by step, week after week.” Despite the setback, Palmer is reportedly “relaxed” and actively engaged in his necessary therapy.
Palmer’s absence has been keenly felt, having last played a competitive match since September 20th when he was forced off after just 21 minutes in Chelsea’s loss at Manchester United last month. This season has been plagued by injury for the 23-year-old forward, limiting him to just two starts in all competitions before his latest setback. His recurrent groin issue first emerged during Chelsea’s shortened pre-season following their successful Club World Cup campaign. The extended recovery period also means Palmer is running short of opportunities to impress England ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
Replacing a player of Palmer’s caliber presents a significant challenge for Chelsea. Maresca highlighted Palmer’s importance, describing him as “a very important player for us, probably one of the best in the Premier League.” He added, “To replace that kind of player is always difficult... We don’t have another player like Cole. He is unique.” The team will need to find “different solutions,” with previous matches seeing Malo Gusto against Liverpool and Facundo Buonanotte against Benfica filling similar roles.
In terms of other squad updates for the upcoming Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, Moisés Caicedo, Pedro Neto, and Enzo Fernández are all listed as injury doubts. However, there is positive news with Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, and Andrey Santos all set to return. One potential option to bolster the attack in Palmer’s absence is Brazilian teenager Estêvão, who has been used sparingly as he adjusts to English football but recently scored a winning goal against the champions in stoppage time, a moment that could be pivotal in improving the team’s morale.
