Chart Domination: Taylor Swift Achieves Historic Adult Contemporary Milestone
Taylor Swift has made Billboard chart history, becoming the first artist to simultaneously place four non-seasonal songs in the Adult Contemporary top 10. This record-breaking achievement underscores her continued dominance, with hits from her album "The Life of a Showgirl" and the "Toy Story 5" soundtrack leading across multiple charts.
Taylor Swift has achieved a new, unprecedented milestone on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, securing four songs simultaneously in the top 10 on the July 18-dated chart. This makes Swift the first artist in the 63-year history of the Adult Contemporary chart, which originated in 1961, to claim as many as four of the top 10 spots in a single week, excluding seasonal music. The only previous instances of such a feat occurred over three weeks during the 2011 holidays, when Michael Bublé placed four songs in the top 10 for two weeks, and an astonishing five songs, including a No. 1, all from his Christmas album.
Swift’s four concurrently charting top 10 hits are positioned consecutively: “The Fate of Ophelia” at No. 7 (having peaked at No. 2), “Opalite” at No. 8 (after reaching No. 4), and “I Knew It, I Knew You” holding steady at its No. 9 high. Climbing four spots, “Elizabeth Taylor” now sits at No. 10, marking her 23rd career Adult Contemporary top 10. Since her first entry into this region on March 22, 2008, Swift leads all artists in total top 10s, surpassing Michael Bublé (19) and Kelly Clarkson (15).
The songs “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite,” and “Elizabeth Taylor” have been promoted as the first three radio singles, in that order, from Swift’s Republic Records album, The Life of a Showgirl. This album, launched last October, made history with a record-shattering 4.002 million first-week equivalent-album units in the United States, according to Luminate. It also became her 15th Billboard 200 No. 1, a record for a solo artist.
“I Knew It, I Knew You,” Swift’s newest single, originates from the Toy Story 5 soundtrack, which has dominated the Kid Albums chart for its first two weeks. In June, this track also soared to become her 15th No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Furthermore, “I Knew It, I Knew You” concurrently ascends 12-9 on the Pop Airplay chart, becoming Swift’s 29th top 10, bringing her within one of Rihanna’s record of 30 top 10s at that format. The song is also bulleting at No. 5 on Adult Pop Airplay and made a landmark entry at No. 10 on Country Airplay.
Swift’s previous chart dominance includes nine career No. 1s on the Adult Contemporary chart, starting with “Love Story” on June 6, 2009. Her total of nine leaders in this stretch also paces all acts, with Adele ranking second with six. As a lyric from “Elizabeth Taylor” suggests, “You’re only as hot as your last hit, baby,” Taylor Swift’s current chart performance unequivocally demonstrates her scorching and enduring popularity across multiple genres. All charts dated July 18 are scheduled to be updated on Tuesday, July 14, on Billboard.com.
