The upcoming comedy film, "Rolling Loud," promises to bring a parent's worst fears to the big screen, depicting the harrowing experience of losing a child amidst the chaotic energy of a jam-packed music festival. Directed by Jeremy Garelick, the movie is based on the popular Rolling Loud hip-hop festival and is set to premiere in U.S. theaters on October 2.
A trailer for the flick, released on Thursday, August 13, offers a glimpse into the star-studded cast and the frenetic plot. Owen Wilson leads as a father who, attempting to be the "cool dad," yields to his 13-year-old son's (Christian Convery) plea to attend Rolling Loud. The narrative quickly spirals into pandemonium when Wilson loses his son during a bathroom trip, swallowed by a sea of 60,000 sweaty rap fans at the Miami festival.
The search party for the missing son quickly turns into an all-out comedic ordeal. Wilson's desperate quest takes him backstage, where he finds himself explaining the dire situation to artists like Sexyy Red and Travis Scott, also known as La Flame. In a particularly memorable scene, Wilson inadvertently ends up on stage during Scott's headlining set, which was notably filmed during Travis Scott’s actual performance at Rolling Loud Miami in December 2024. The trailer also features other prominent figures such as Matt Rife, Christine Ko, Ski Mask the Slump God, and Ty Dolla $ign, adding to the film's ensemble cast.
The film's comedic tone is underscored by quick exchanges, like Sexyy Red's comment, "You’re the guy on the big screen that all the security’s looking for," followed by a confused query, "You jumped off a Ferris wheel, right?" To which Wilson humorously clarifies, "No, I threw someone off a Ferris wheel."
Director Jeremy Garelick revealed that the concept for "Rolling Loud" was loosely inspired by a real-life incident where he temporarily lost track of his own son at a past Rolling Loud festival. He shared with People, "The fact that we had this experience together, it bonded us and it really brought us together. It gave us those inside jokes, those secrets that we can’t tell anybody. And then to put it into a movie that’s coming out all over the world, it’s just incredible. I think parents should take their kids and enjoy it." The film is being helmed by Rolling Loud and Live Nation.
While the movie captures the essence of the festival, it's worth noting that Rolling Loud's only 2026 U.S. festival took place in Orlando in May, featuring headliners like Don Toliver, Ken Carson, and Playboi Carti, underscoring the ongoing cultural impact of the actual music event that inspired this comedic adventure.
